It was designated as one of the 100 best urban landscapes and a Japan Heritage site in 2019. It is said that Takehara was first developed as a manor land for Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto during the Heian period under the Kenta Einen Private Property Law. In the Muromachi period, Takakage, the third son of Motonari Mouri, spent his early childhood. Takakage was one of the people who supported the Mouri clan by receiving the "Teachings of the Three Arrows" from Motonari. After that, in the late Edo period, it developed with "salt fields" and "sake brewing", and in particular, it is said that it boasted an 80% share of Hiroshima Prefecture at that time in salt. There are three breweries: Taketsuru Brewery, Fujii Brewery, and Nakao Brewery. Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka Whiskey, who is called the "Father of Japanese Whiskey", was born in Takehara. Taketsuru Sake Brewery, the birthplace of Masataka, is still operating in the townscape preservation district to this day. Around this time when salt and sake were developed, Sanyo Rai, a Confucian scholar and author of "Nihon Gaishi," who had a great influence on patriots at the end of the Edo period, was active. Sanyo's grandfather Yoriyoshi's old house is located in the townscape preservation district. (Excerpt from the Japan Association for Historical Travel) Every year, the "Takehara Sotan no Michi" takes place in the townscape preservation district, where beautiful candles and bamboo lanterns beautifully light up the city. The atmosphere of an old private house that leaks through the lattice door is also elegant, and you will be caught in the illusion of a time slip.
