With a history of 1400 years, tiles have protected Japanese houses, including shrines and temples. Among them, there are "Onishi" who have the skills of a master craftsman who draws a blueprint in his head while looking at the drawing with his own eyes without using blueprints or molds, and finishes it only with the sense of his fingertips and a handmade spatula. You can make a one-of-a-kind oni tile by learning from an "Onishi" how to make oni tile by hand using "name-do" soil that is more than 2 million years old. Awaji Island is one of the three major production areas of tiles in Japan, and is the number one producer of smoked tiles that shine with "silver". Tiles have a history of more than 1400 years, and tile making has been going on in Awaji Island for more than 400 years. Moreover, the soil used for Awaji tiles is still more than 2 million years old, and the very fine particles of "name-do" are used to create smoked tiles that shine with a beautiful silver color by baking (smoking) them in a kiln. In Japan, onigawara tiles have been used to decorate roofs as a talisman since ancient times. Even today, these onigawara tiles are carefully handcrafted by oni-shi (demon craftsmen) without the use of machines. Normally, you don't get to see onigawara tiles being made, but in this experience, you can watch the onigawara craftsmen's skills up close and make onigawara tiles together. Since this experience is limited to one group, you can make onigawara tiles without worrying about other people. If you have any questions or questions about how to make them, you can ask the onigawara maker at any time, and it is an experience where you can experience traditional techniques in a private atmosphere. [Procedure] 1. Draw a rough sketch of the image (you can also bring a draft with you) 2. Decide on the design of the onigawara tile 3. Together with the onigawara maker, use tile clay (nametsu) to create a rough shape 4. Let it cure (eat lunch (each person) during this time) 5. Finish the fine details using a spatula and your fingertips 6. Completed (you can also take a commemorative photo with the onigawara maker) *The work will then be carefully dried and fired and delivered in about two months. *For lunch, you can enjoy Awaji Island's specialty "Kawara-yaki" at the facility (additional charge required).

Why not go and discover the lost history of this town that flourished as a post town on the road during the Edo period? Kyohei Tamura, our guide for this Snow Country Retreat, majored in history in college and is a big fan of the Sengoku period. He fell in love with the history of the Mimata region. Although it is not famous, there are anecdotes that allow you to feel the breath of the people of the Edo period, and stories of the head of a family that lived in the village from its early days and continued to protect the oldest wakihonjin that still exists on the Mikuni Kaido road. Let's trace the history together, which is full of emotion that cannot be conveyed by words alone. Nowadays, the area is famous for its ski resorts, but the lives of the people who have been living here since the Edo period are the backbone of how it got to where it is today. There are things that become clear when you focus on the lives of the people who lived and continued to live strong lives despite being tossed about by the flow of history. It's not just skiing, but you can feel the charm of this mountain village. Although it is a "history retreat," no specialized knowledge is required. We will guide you not only through historical facts but also the feelings of the people at that time.

This is a workshop where you can experience making snowboards using thinned cedar wood. This project contributes to the SDGs by using unneeded thinned wood without waste. Snowboarding is a sport that combines skateboarding without bindings or edges, surfing, and snowboarding. The surface of the board is non-slip, so you can enjoy it easily with boots or snow shoes. What is a snowboard? Snowboards and snowtoys are a unique Japanese culture that was born from the idea of sliding across the snow with a wooden board. This simple toy, which has no edges or soles and is coated with varnish or resin and has a non-slip surface where you place your feet, spread quickly throughout snowy countries, giving birth to creative shapers all over the country and is still spreading rapidly (from the BUDDHABLANK website). Enjoy the winter season with a one-of-a-kind snowboard that you made yourself! [Limited benefits only available when you make a reservation at Activity Japan] With each snowboard, you will receive a free Arcadia hand towel and Arcadia Snowboard WAX! ◆Workshop contents and itinerary◆1. Choose your favorite blanks Boards before finishing are called "blanks". Look at the shape, wood color and design of the blanks we have prepared in advance and choose one you like! 2. Varnish the sliding surface and attach the cloth Apply varnish to the sliding surface and attach the cloth you brought or purchased. Carefully attach the cloth, paying attention to the sliding direction and the front and back of the cloth. *If you bring your own cloth, wash it once and dry it thoroughly to make it stick more beautifully. [Wait until the varnish dries] (about 40 minutes) We have a workshop and experience menu that you can experience in between! 3. Apply multiple coats of varnish, then scrape and polish it when it dries Once the varnish dries, scrape and polish it with sandpaper, and apply more varnish. *Lunch will be served during the break. 4. Finish the front side where you put your feet Cut the excess cloth to fit the shape of the board and finish the front side nicely. 5. Attach the deck pad and it's done! Thank you for your hard work! Once the varnish has completely dried, go skiing right away♪☆ Applying more varnish and polishing it will make the board even stronger. ◆ Take a short break between workshops ◆ Try snowboarding at a nearby snowboarding spot?️ Master the skill so you can ride the snowboard you made right away! [For those who wish to try] Request: The experience is scheduled for 5 hours, but it may be extended depending on the process. ・ Please bring your own lunch or use a nearby restaurant. Eating and drinking is permitted inside the building. ・ We recommend pasting cloth to increase strength. You can bring a cloth of the same size as an Arcadia tenugui and paste it on. This two-day tour includes a snowboarding session to enjoy the satoyama terrain at the Sakegawa Eco Park campsite, which is surrounded by snowy satoyama, making a sample shaped snowboard, and a social gathering at a cottage in the eco park. Sakegawa Village is a snowy rural village with about 1.5m of snow even on the flat ground, and broadleaf satoyama spreads around the clear stream "Sakegawa" where salmon swim up. This year, Sakegawa Village's boarding friends who have enjoyed snowboarding and skateboarding in the past gathered together and established a volunteer group called the "Sakegawa Village Boarding Promotion Council" to enjoy the snowy satoyama terrain of Sakegawa Village with snowboards. The council aims to launch an original snowboard brand, and while learning from seniors who are leading the snowboard culture in the boarding industry, they are also holding activities such as snowboarding experience sessions at the village's snow festival. This tour starts at the Sakegawa Eco Park campsite, and includes a snowboarding session that makes use of the unique terrain of the snowy satoyama, making a sample shape of an original snowboard, and a boarding social gathering at a cottage in the evening. ~Experience flow~ [Day 1] 10:00 Let's try gliding down the park course and natural Satoyama course on a snowboard! 12:00 There is a restaurant in Sakegawa Village Eco Park.
