The Machiishimichi pilgrimage route to Mount Koya is registered as a World Heritage Site along with the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route in Spain. A total of 180 signposts are placed every cho (approximately 109 meters) from Jison-in Temple to the Great Pagoda of Mount Koya. "Hidden Christian Sites in Nagasaki and Amakusa Region" registered as a World Heritage Site in July 2018. Most of them are remote islands, but there is only one area in Nagasaki that can be reached by car. It is the Sotome area located on the border with Saikai City in the northern part of the prefecture. While escaping to Amakusa and Goto in the distance, the area that became the root of "hidden" is "Sotome". It is also the place where Shusaku Endo's book "Silence" was set. The "Hidden Christian Cultural Museum" and "Karematsu Shrine", which are important for learning about the history of Hidden Christians, are included in the course, and finally, by visiting the Endo Shusaku Literary Museum, you can go through the history of Hidden Christians step by step. Welcome to Kawaguchi, one of the first post towns on the ancient Nikko Onari Kaido highway, which once connected Edo (modern day Tokyo) with the temple and shrine-filled city of Nikko. Your guide will meet you at Shakujouji Temple, just a short walk from the station, ready to take you into a day in the life of a shogun traveling to Nikko to pay their respects at Toshogu Shrine. Generations of Tokugawa shoguns, who ruled over Japan during the Edo period, stopped here during their journeys. Your guide will give you an overview of this history, before taking part in a Buddhist blessing ritual. Then get a true taste of Edo cuisine, by enjoying the same meal that shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune ate during his visit to the temple on April 13, 1728. The menu was recorded in a historical chronicle, and an Edo food expert recreated each individual dish based on recipe books from the period. Finally, you will have the unique opportunity to try on a Takasagozome kimono, featuring elaborate patterns that were all the rage in the inner quarters of the shogun's court. Most people in Japan have never seen, let alone worn, a Takasago-dyed kimono!

Experience the Edo period for a moment at Shakujoji Temple, the first stop on the Tokugawa Shogun's journey to Nikko. Learn about the temple's deep ties to the Edo Shogunate and receive a blessing from a monk for a safe journey. The highlight of the tour is an authentic Shogun Lunch, based on the recipe of the lunch eaten by Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune at Shakujoji Temple in April 1728. You will also have the opportunity to try on and take photos in a rare Takasago-dyed kimono, once beloved by the ladies of the Ooku.

We have prepared a special program that is limited to one group per day and allows you to enjoy Shizuoka tea with all five senses. The Higashiyama district, which produces tea that has been designated as a World Agricultural Heritage Site, is one of the highest quality tea producing areas in the prefecture, but in recent years there has been an increase in the number of dilapidated tea plantations in this area. In this plan, you will pick tea in a scenic tea plantation that has been renovated from a ruined tea plantation, and you will enjoy the picked tea with tempura or as a kaiseki meal with seasonal local ingredients. Also, as a fun activity before and after your meal, you can work up a sweat by climbing up to the top of Mt. Awagatake, the symbol of the area, for about 30 minutes. From the mountaintop terrace, you can see the large tea garden below, the Oi River, Suruga Bay, and the Izu Peninsula on the horizon. On clear days from autumn to winter, you can even see Mt. Fuji. After your meal, enjoy a sencha ceremony where you can brew delicious tea yourself using a teapot.
