After stripping the bark from the tree, Uetsu Shina cloth is made entirely by hand, going through 22 processes over 365 days. The experience of using this precious Shina is unique to this area. "Ise Katagami" is used for dyeing kimonos. It is a traditional craft technique that has been passed down in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture for over a thousand years. ``Ise Katagami'' is made by a craftsman called a katagami, who uses a chisel to carve intricate patterns and designs onto durable Japanese paper. It is surprising that more than 900 patterns are carved into a single inch (approximately 3cm) corner using a very fine piece of material.
