Because this town has been the transportation hub, a variety of agricultural products gathered here. Merchants amassed wealth in their fields and created mansion towns. Inside these mansions, "Kura'' or a storehouse was built by wealthy merchants to store documents and household furniture. This storehouse is still inhabited and rare even in Japan. Feel the elegance in the detailed decorations such as white plaster, polished black plaster and lacquered interior. The townscape is home to many historic buildings of this area. Masuda town was designated as a National Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2013. Find the storehouses of each mansion with its unique structure and decoration. The Meiji era playhouse Korakukan is still active for over 100 years and still performs regular performances (popular theater and other) today. The 2025 performances are April 23rd to July 27th, "Shitamachi Kabuki Gumi" Leader Mimine Toru → Starring Shingetsu Kaito → Starring Hitomi Hiroshi (Starring Subaru Toma), with performances taking place in rotation for about one month each. It is interesting that the performers change every year as this theater troupe was formed just for the Korakukan performance. This is a special experience of walking along the beautiful clear stream that flows from the vast beech forest of the Shirakami-Sanchi World Heritage Site. A guide will accompany you, so even if you are new to river trekking, you can feel at ease. You will walk along a river so clear that you can see the bottom. If it gets too hot, you can swim, jump in, or let yourself go with the gentle current. It is an activity that even adults can enjoy. You can play safely as you will wear a life jacket. This is a bonfire experience at the foot of the Shirakami Mountains, a World Heritage Site. You can participate empty-handed. A camping instructor will support you from starting the fire, so even beginners can feel at ease. It is possible all year round. In winter, you can experience camping in the snow. If you wish, you can also experience batoning and feather stick making. The experience time is about 2 hours.
