Plan description

This tour will take you to Otsu Hyakumachi on the popular Lake Biwa Canal Boat, where you can watch the Otsu Festival, one of the three major festivals in Lake Biwa. You can enjoy watching the gorgeously decorated floats parade through the town while performing Karakuri dolls to the accompaniment of traditional music. You can stroll through the old post town of Otsujuku, learn about the history of the festival at the Hikiyama Exhibition Hall, and enjoy a special lunch of Omi beef, a Shiga specialty, in the viewing seats. At the highlight of the float parade, you will have the special experience of seeing the intricate movements of the Karakuri dolls up close. A guided tour that only a local guide can provide! Take a "walk around the town" in the special atmosphere of the festival

A guide who knows the area inside and out will show you the remains of old town houses and long-established stores along the old Tokaido road, while introducing you to the history of the prosperity of the 100 towns of Otsu, including the background to how the Otsu Festival was born from the economic power of wealthy merchants. Tour participants can experience a special stroll just for you in the atmosphere of the 100 towns of Otsu bustling with festivals.

Watch the float parade and Karakuri demonstration from the paid viewing area

From the viewing stand along the old Tokaido road, you can enjoy a close-up look at the gorgeously decorated floats and the historically-derived Karakuri parades, accompanied by musical accompaniment and explanations!

Lunch will be a special "Omi Beef Lunch Box" using Shiga Prefecture's specialty "Omi Beef", and a commemorative gift (such as a ward off evil spirits rice dumpling) will be given. The viewing area will be the NHK Otsu Broadcasting Station parking lot along the old Tokaido road. There will be special openings on the day and events will be held.
