It is a trading port with 140 years of history as one of the world's leading international ports. It flourished as a foreign settlement during the Meiji period, and even today many of its exotic buildings remain, making it popular with tourists as they are great for social media. Kobe's landmarks such as the Port Tower, Mosaic Ferris Wheel, and the large shopping mall umie stand side by side. Take a leisurely stroll along the sea while feeling the sea breeze.
Kitano Ijinkan-gai is characterized by its streets that still convey the atmosphere of the Meiji era, when many foreigners lived there since the port of Kobe was opened. On a hill overlooking the sea, there are many foreign houses open to the public, including the Weathervane House, a national important cultural property with its symbolic weathervane on the roof, and Moegi no Yakata, the residence of former U.S. Consul General Hunter Sharp, where you can experience exotic culture and history. The Kitano area of Kobe is bustling with tourists and has many wonderful shops. Kitano, a harmonious area filled with exotic atmosphere, is full of discoveries that will make you want to return again and again.
Arima Onsen, a secret retreat in the Kansai region that was also loved by Taiko Hideyoshi, is one of Japan's three oldest hot springs. Beloved by many literary figures and celebrities, the hot spring town is still filled with old-fashioned charm. You can enjoy different spring qualities: Arima's specialty "Kinsen," a brown spring containing iron and salt, and the colorless and transparent "Ginsen," which is popular among women for making their skin smooth. There are two public outdoor baths, Kin no Yu (Kinsen) and Gin no Yu (Ginsen). There are also inns that offer day-trip bathing, and Arima Onsen Taiko no Yu, a hot spring theme park with 24 types of baths. We also recommend touring the seven springs, including Tenjinsengen, which emits white smoke from a central chimney while making a gurgling sound. *Recommended day trip hot spring Taiko no Yu Address: 292-2 Ikenoshiri, Arima-cho, Kita-ku, Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture The largest and only historical exploration type spa theme park in Arima Onsen where you can enjoy hot springs and bedrock baths with gold springs, silver springs and carbonated springs. Kitano Foreigners' House Street Numerous Western-style buildings were built in Kobe from the Meiji to Taisho periods, and the Kitano era in Chuo Ward is currently the most perfectly preserved. Kitano's Yamamoto-dori 1-chome to 3-chome is known as Kitano Ijinkan-gai, and most of the buildings were private residences of foreign businessmen or foreign embassies and consulates. As you walk up the mountain along Kitano-dori and Ijinkan-dori, you will see small Western-style buildings scattered here and there. Some have been renovated into museums or art galleries, while others have been left as they were and are open to the public. Boutiques, coffee shops, small restaurants, flower shops, and more are dotted among the exotic houses. The elegant and exotic atmosphere, reminiscent of a small European town, is perfect for a stroll.
