“Amami no Sato” is a famous place where you can experience the nature, culture and life of Amami, even though it is located on the mainland of Kagoshima Prefecture. Amami's nature and climate spread over 16,000 tsubo of land. In the outer garden, the majestic Japanese garden "Michinoshima Garden" that symbolizes "Michinoshima Amami" and the "Amami-style garden" full of tropical atmosphere such as bougainvillea and cycads invite visitors to the southern island. In addition, all of the authentic Oshima Tsumugi, which has become synonymous with Amami culture, is on display, and you can actually see the manufacturing process of Oshima Tsumugi at the museum of Kiemon Fujitsu, who spent his life on Oshima Tsumugi to create the "Tokiemon" brand. .
We were received very hospitably and had a amazing experience. The people were really friendly & supportive. We had a lot of fun and they tried to explain us, although we did not speak Japanese. It was really interesting to experience this ancient art. It was one of the best experiences out of our total Japan trip. Thanks to all the staff members!
◎Natural dyeing refers to the process of dyeing cloth by extracting pigments from flower petals, grass and tree branches. This vegetable dyeing is also used in some of the dyeing techniques of Oshima Tsumugi. At Amami no Sato, you can experience making original handkerchiefs and stoles in deep colors by actually plant-dying fabrics such as handkerchiefs. ◎In the hand-weaving corner, you can experience making original works using a hand-loom for beginners and an actual Oshima Tsumugi hand-loom. The workshop staff will carefully guide you, so even beginners can experience the fun and wonder of hand weaving. ◎In the Kumihimo corner, you can experience making Kumihimo straps using the kasuri threads of Oshima Tsumugi. Easy to make, anyone can do it.
After the experience, you can see the Amami-style garden, which represents the virgin forest of Amami Oshima with tropical plants, and the Amami Life Museum, which reproduces the lifestyle of the Amami people at that time. In addition, you can take a walk while admiring the flowers of the four seasons in a creative Japanese garden with stepping stone-shaped rocks that are likened to the islands of the road. The carp feeding experience on the way is a popular experience spot for small children. You can also see the manufacturing factory that actually manufactures Oshima Tsumugi, a traditional craft of Amami Oshima, and the Oshima Tsumugi Museum, which exhibits precious Oshima Tsumugi works.
Amami chicken rice is a representative local dish of Kagoshima and Amami Oshima at "Kenmi Waraku Hanaka" on the premises of Amami no Sato. It is called "Ten-sama cuisine". We use carefully selected ingredients and take our time to prepare them. Please try it once after the experience or before the experience. *Reservations are recommended when visiting the museum.
