This snowshoeing tour was one of the best things I did in Japan, even as a foreigner. All the guides I was with spoke very good English and were super knowledgeable and fun to talk to. They responded quickly to my queries about transport to Zao Liza World (which can be accessed by bus from Yamagata if well timed), and details about the experience. The equipment is high quality and very fun to learn to use. The scenery and waterfall is very impressive. Overall, value for money and fun is fantastic and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone travelling in Japan.

Walk in Shiretoko National Park, a World Natural Heritage Site, with snowshoes during the snowy season. If there is no snow, walk without snowshoes. As you walk through the natural forest, you can see waterfalls and huge icicles flowing in the Sea of Okhotsk, and drift ice depending on the season. You can mainly observe Yezo deer and wild birds. You may also see eagles, woodpeckers, and flying squirrels, which are natural monuments.
I came alone, but the guide was very nice and still tried his best to explain things to me and take care of me. Overall, it was still very worthwhile to experience this trip:)

To the world where wild animals live! Let's go on a deep snowy mountain expedition from a hunter's perspective! The snow-covered mountains are very quiet, creating a mysterious space that makes us feel as if we were the only ones. However, in reality, a world like a parallel world where various wild animals such as wild boars, deer, antelopes, black bears, hares, squirrels, martens, raccoon dogs, and foxes live is spreading. In winter, traces of wild animals such as footprints left on the snow are likely to remain, and the leaves of the trees are likely to fall, so it is a season where it is easier to find traces and appearances than in other seasons. Let's walk with an active hunter (guide) from the satoyama to the Okuyama where the primeval forests of beech and quercus crispula remain, and go on a back mountain exploration to experience the world where wild animals live that you could not see until now!
