Noboribetsu Jigokudani got its name because it smells of sulfur and looks like you are in hell. Oyunuma is the remains of a crater formed when Hiyoriyama erupted, and sulfur springs at about 130 degrees gush out from the bottom of the pond, which is the source of Noboribetsu's main hot spring inns. In the winter, you can enjoy ice fishing for smelt around Lake Ogawara in Aomori Prefecture. Lake Ogawara is the number one smelt resource in Japan! The Anenuma smelt fishing spot is connected by a waterway, and the fish are dense and the water is shallow, making it very easy to fish.
