Enjoy Kutani and the stylish tradesman culture in a retro-modern townhouse. Komatsu's old town area was formed around Komatsu Castle, which used to be here. The artist, Yukio Uchida, is the only artist in this area where the stylish tradesman culture, including Kabuki and Hikiyama, still remains, and is the only person involved in the production of Kutani ware. He is also the owner of "Toraya Ceramics Store", which has a store in a renovated building of the traditional architectural style "Komatsu Machiya". In this program, under the guidance of Mr. Uchida, Kutani ware painting of "Kutani style" will be performed in a retro-modern Komatsu Machiya. After the experience, enjoy the many furnishings and tasteful atmosphere stored in the tea room with all five senses while tasting the matcha tea that Mr. Uchida himself makes in the tea room. * For foreign nationals: Information on the day will be in Japanese only.
Based on the design of Kutani, which Mr. Yukio, who grew up in Toraya Pottery Store, has been fascinated by, we will have a painting experience where anyone can challenge the "Kutani style". Experience the Toraya Ceramics Store on the 2nd floor. It is one of the "Komatsu Machiya" that retains the taste of tradesman culture in Komatsu. You can fully enjoy Kutani ware in a quaint space such as a tatami room with vermilion walls, a Western-style room with a modern Showa atmosphere, a splendid tsubo garden overlooking downstairs, and a tea room in the back.
One of the characteristics of Komatsu's tea ceremony culture is that Toshitsune Maeda, who retired to Komatsu Castle, encouraged not only samurai families but also merchants and tradesmen to use tea ceremony widely. The Toraya Ceramics Store also holds a tea ceremony every May at the 250-year-old Komatsu City's largest festival, the Travel Festival. In this program as well, Mr. Yukio himself makes tea at the end of the painting experience. You can enjoy the true history and taste of Komatsu's tradesman culture with all five senses in a relaxing tea room.
If you go up the steep stairs like a townhouse, you will find a tatami room and a tea room like a hideaway. Here, the works of famous masters in Kutani are exhibited, which are still preserved because of the "Toraya Ceramics Store", which has been a wholesaler and retailer of Kutani ware. In the calm atmosphere of traditional architecture such as tatami rooms and tea rooms, you can feel the cultural aspect of Kutani ware's prosperity from a side that is a bit different from the works you see in museums and galleries.
