It is the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan. ▼Toya Lake Cero Observatory is a great place to take panoramic photos of Lake Toya. Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch: On December 28, 1943, a large earthquake occurred near Mt. Usu on the shores of Lake Toya. As a result, the volcano erupted and the earth rapidly rose to form a tall mountain. Volcanic activity continued until September 10, 1945, and there were 17 relatively active volcanic events in two years. In commemoration of this volcanic activity, a new volcano with an elevation of 398 meters was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1957 and named "Showa Shinzan".
