Sashiko is a technique that was born from this and nowadays become one of traditional handicraft which was born from taking good care of things and the wisdom of life. At that time, there were no schools, and Sashiko was passed down from parent to child. Therefore, there is not just one technique, but multiple techniques. The repair method is the same. Here we would like to introduce some of the sashiko mending and darning techniques. This was one of my favorite things i have ever done. It was not only fun, but the family that hosts the experience is so extremely nice they gave us so many gifts for no reason! and noone else signed up so it was completely personal! The location is very nice, right by a historical ryuuku kingdom castle, and in a lot of nature. Furthermore, I learned so much from them about natural dyes that i wanted to try it back in my home country! They are very funny hosts and speak some english so it is ok even if you know a little japanese! We stayed for a very long time just talking and laughing!

I had a great time doing this sashiko workshop. Keiko was very kind and explained how to do things very well. It may be more difficult if you don't have any prior experience with hand sewing but it is still doable with some patience and concentration. We did not finish the project but were given instructions on how to finish the piece. You learn all the skills you will need in the time allotted. Our first day in Kyoto was a bit of a wild ride but nothing topped our chopstick making Experience. My wife and I were on honeymoon and weren't sure what to expect. The house took us into his lovely machiya and did his best to communicate with us despite his difficulty with English and our difficulty with Japanese. He was nothing but helpful and guided our experience. It was quite amazing being shown how to shape the chopsticks and polished them into their final product.
