Miyama Thatched Village Trivia: The biggest difference between "Gassho Village" and "Thatched Houses": The roofs of Gassho Village are thatched on only two sides, but the thatch covering both sides looks like two palms, hence the name "Gassho". The main purpose of this is to prevent snow from staying on the roof in winter. The roofs of thatched houses are covered with thatch on all four sides, which serves to protect against wind and rain, and keep the house warm in winter and cool in summer.
