Plan description

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique that gives new meaning to broken objects. This technique symbolizes the "aesthetic sense of embracing imperfection" and the "spirit of cherishing things." While each restored vessel carries its own story, it is reborn as a completely new, unique piece, ready to be cherished and used for many years to come. In this workshop, you will learn the techniques of kintsugi directly under the guidance of a traditional craftsman with over 50 years of experience in the production and restoration of Buddhist altar implements. The instructor is a highly skilled artisan certified by the Japanese government as a "Traditional Craftsman" and awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette in recognition of his many years of achievement. Under the careful guidance of a skilled craftsman, you will learn the key steps of kintsugi: using genuine lacquer to join broken pieces, repairing chips, and applying gold leaf as a finishing touch. This interaction with artisans who have continued to preserve Japan's traditional crafts will go beyond mere technical experience; it will be a valuable opportunity to experience Japan's "living traditions" and broaden your horizons.

Craftsman Tsutomu Matsuda will carefully teach you the traditional gold lacquering techniques.

Mr. Matsuda is a skilled craftsman well versed in the lacquer techniques used in traditional Japanese crafts. He has a friendly and approachable personality, and has extensive knowledge and experience in lacquering, offering instruction not only in kintsugi but also in a variety of other Japanese crafts. If requested, he will also introduce his own works, such as Buddhist altars and other Buddhist accessories, allowing you to further deepen your understanding of Japanese culture. ・He has been involved in the production of Buddhist altars and accessories for over 50 years and has won numerous awards in various competitions. ・In 2004, he was certified as a "Traditional Craftsman (national qualification)" for his advanced skills and techniques in traditional crafts. ・In 2019, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette in recognition of his many years of achievements.
