Otaru Canal in Winter The Otaru Canal was completed in 1923 and is the only canal in Japan that was not dug inland but instead built by reclaiming land off the coast. The canal is 1,140m long and features a gentle curve. The Otaru Canal is a symbol of Otaru, one of Hokkaido's leading tourist destinations. This waterway supported the shipping of Otaru, a port city that supported the development of Hokkaido, and along the canal there are many historical brick buildings and warehouses, allowing you to see the nostalgic scenery unique to Otaru.

Free stroll around Sakaimachi, Otaru Otaru Canal is a place where history lives on as the gateway to Hokkaido. A leisurely stroll along the canal, where many goods once passed through, while admiring the stone warehouses and the warm glow of gas lamps, will leave you feeling nostalgic, as if time had stopped. The retro townscape, which retains the atmosphere of the time when the city prospered through maritime trade, never ceases to fascinate visitors. Be comforted by the beautiful glasswork of Kitaichi Glass and the gentle music of the Otaru Music Box Museum, and experience history at the former Hokkaido Bank Head Office and Kitakaro. Otaru Music Box Museum Steam Clock The world's first steam clock was completed in 1977 by Raymond Sanders, a clockmaker from Gastown, Canada, known as the birthplace of Vancouver, who spent two years working on it with the hope of preserving and developing Gastown. The steam clock in front of the main building was built on June 25, 1994 at Marchen Crossing, the birthplace of Otaru, in an attempt to embody the spirit of warm-hearted urban development. This steam clock is Raymond Sanders' second work, and is sister to the steam clock in Gastown, Vancouver. The exterior is made of British-style bronze, and it is the world's largest steam clock, standing 5.5 meters tall and weighing 1.5 tons. The clock itself is electrically operated, but the boiler generates steam under computer control, and the five whistles on the top chime the time with a gentle and warm melody every 15 minutes. The sound of the clock stops people passing by Marchen Crossing, and they feel relieved and soothed. It is also a popular photo spot.

Shiroi Koibito Park This is a factory and sweets theme park run by Ishiya Confectionery, known as one of Sapporo's leading confectionery companies. Since opening in 1995, it has become one of Sapporo's most famous tourist attractions, attracting attention from Hokkaido residents, as well as tourists from outside Hokkaido and overseas. Inside the facility, there are plenty of exciting activities, such as a tour of the Shiroi Koibito factory and workshops where you can experience making sweets. There is also a cafe where you can taste original sweets that can only be found here. It is a chocolate entertainment facility that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways by children and adults alike. *Chocotopia Factory admission is not included in the tour price.
