Plan description

Nokogiriyama is known as a low-profile mountain on the Boso Peninsula. On its southern side is the grounds of Nippon-ji Temple, the imperial temple of Emperor Shomu, which will celebrate its 1,300th anniversary in 2025. This plan is a half-day tour to experience the charms of Nokogiriyama Nippon-ji Temple, starting from JR Yasuda Station, walking along the main approach to the temple and climbing Nokogiriyama from the mountain gate. Once inside the Nippon-ji Temple grounds, you can enjoy the mystical atmosphere of the tallest Buddha statue in Japan (as a seated statue and rock-carved Buddha), as well as the 1,500 arhat statues arranged on the mountainside. Climb the stairs to the top of the mountain, pass by the famous photo spots "Hell Peek" and "Hyakushaku Kannon", and then use the ropeway to return down the mountain.

You can see the view of Mt. Fuji and Tokyo Bay, which was also depicted in Hiroshige's ukiyo-e art!

Travel became popular among the common people during the Edo period. At that time, "travel" was for faith or prayer, and many travelers and cultural figures from Edo visited Nokogiriyama Nihonji Temple. Hiroshige Utagawa painted an ukiyo-e of the view of Tokyo Bay and Mt. Fuji that can be seen on the way from Yasuda Station to Omotesando. If the weather is good, you can still enjoy the view today.

The guide's explanations will give you a thorough understanding of the world and history of Buddhism!

Within the grounds, there are not only 1,500 arhat statues, but also Buddhist statues lined up along the mountainside, including statues of Kobo Daishi and Prince Shotoku, who brought Buddhism to Japan. The guide's explanations allow you to understand the history and historical background of Buddhism as if you were reading a picture scroll.

Please wear athletic shoes such as hiking boots or sneakers, and comfortable clothing suitable for low mountain hikes. We recommend that you carry a backpack to keep your hands free. If you have hiking equipment such as walking poles, it is also convenient to use them.

Plan attractions

Japanese temple Nihon-ji Temple, which has a long history as a temple established under the imperial decree of Emperor Shomu, is a mountain temple with Mt. Nokogiri as its grounds. Enter through the mountain gate from the main approach and head towards the summit.

Big Buddha Square After many events since the Edo period, the Great Buddha was carved from the entire stone mountain in 1969, and is 31.05m tall. It is the largest rock-carved Buddha in Japan.

1,500 Arhat statues During the Edo period, the group of 1,553 stone Buddha statues attracted many worshippers. They blend into the natural surroundings and are said to have no two faces the same.

Peek into Hell This is a thrilling photo spot where you can look down from the tip of a wall that remains in the air. The recommended angle to take the photo is from the Ruriko Observatory opposite.

Hyakushaku Kannon This large Kannon statue, measuring approximately 30 meters in length, was carved into the rock face of a quarry near the summit in 1966 over a period of six years.

Nokogiriyama Ropeway You can get a panoramic view of Tokyo Bay from the ropeway. When the weather is good, you can even see Mt. Fuji clearly on the opposite shore!
