Plan description

Spend a full day creating a kozuka — a small decorative utility blade that was once concealed in the scabbard of a Japanese sword.
The material used is the same as that used in real Japanese swords & tamahagane, the highest-grade steel in the world.
During the experience, you will make a clay base (tsuchi-dai), inscribe a blade crest (yasurime), attach the blade, carve your name onto it, craft a kozuka case, and sharpen the blade to complete the piece.

Our studio is the only place where you can experience both making a kozuka and sharpening it yourself. You will learn the Japanese sword-making process through hands-on work. Striking and shaping iron, and seeing the wave-like patterns emerge, is something you cannot fully understand until you try it yourself — making this a truly valuable learning experience.

The experience is tailored to each participant’s ability, so minors and women are also welcome — there’s no need to worry.
You are welcome to take photos and videos during the process!

The fee covers the experience for one kozuka. Two or more people can work together to make one, but please let us know in advance when booking.

If you wish to make more than one, please note that it will take approximately one extra hour per additional piece.
Please allow plenty of time before the expected end time.
It is also possible to start earlier upon request & feel free to contact us.

Same process as Japanese sword making

You can experience how a lump of iron becomes one work. The sheath is made of the same material as the Japanese sword sheath, and the whetstone is also the same.

* Option 1

If you also apply for the Japanese sword making tour, the tour fee will be half price, 25,000 yen instead of 50,000 yen!!

There is a pick-up service

We offer a pick-up service from JR Mino-Ota Station. Pick-up time is 8:45, but you can change it to your desired time. Please contact us by the day before.

Explanation-Making fire (overall shaping)
09:00

Explanation-Making fire (overall shaping) I will explain the manufacturing process of Japanese swords while looking at a sample. After that, the iron is heated and beaten to give it an overall shape.

File and place in the soil
10:30

File and place in the soil Use a file to remove the unevenness of the beaten iron, and place it on the ground to determine the shape of the blade pattern. The difference in the thickness of the soil creates a blade pattern.

Quenching-file
13:00

Quenching-file The heated iron is cooled rapidly and a blade pattern is added. I will file the whole thing.

Inscription
14:00

Inscription You will have to carve your name yourself.

Sharpening
14:30

Sharpening In the same process as polishing a Japanese sword, it is sharpened using several types of whetstones.

Making a sheath
15:00

Making a sheath Make a white scabbard that fits perfectly with a knife, using a saw or chisel. We use the same material used for the white sheath of Japanese swords.

Finish
16:00

Finish I will finish it using a fine whetstone.
