Awaji Island is one of Japan's three major tile-producing areas, boasting the highest production of oxidized roofing tiles in Japan, with a gleaming "silver-like" finish. In this experience, you'll create an original miniature onigawara (demon tile) approximately 20cm square, based on the theme of onigawara (demon tile), a symbol of Japan's tile culture that has continued for over 1,400 years. There are only about 50 "oni-shi" (demon craftsmen) nationwide who specialize in handcrafting onigawara (demon tiles), making them a rare breed. Add eyes and corners to the basic base as you like, creating a one-of-a-kind piece. Once completed, it will be smoked and delivered to your home. Enjoy it as a memento of your trip, as interior décor, or as a talisman.
This is a unique experience-based course where you can simultaneously enjoy making onigawara tiles using traditional clay roof tiles and a roof tile lunch that makes the most of the characteristics of roof tiles.
No dangerous tools are used, and staff will carefully support the creation process, so even those new to crafting or those with children can participate with peace of mind.
The onigawara you create will be smoked and delivered to your home, allowing you to enjoy the experience for years to come as interior décor or as a talisman.
