KANJI TOKYO

KANJI TOKYO features

At KANJI TOKYO, we hold calligraphy classes where you can learn about the history and origins of kanji, practice the basics of strokes, and practice the kanji learned in the first grade of elementary school. After that, calligraphy artist MADARA will convert the English names of overseas customers into kanji and print them on T-shirts, tote bags, and hand towels. Madara will write the name calligraphy in the handwriting calligraphy style, which is said to improve luck in talent, brilliance, and money, and will use it for printing. You can also choose your favorite original ink painting drawn by Madara and set it as the background when printing. This is a workshop where you can create and hand over a completely original Japanese design item that is one of a kind in the world. You can enjoy lunch in Hiratsuka City for 2-3 hours until the product is completed, and then hand over the product.

KANJI TOKYO recommended points

Give foreigners a deep experience through calligraphy!

Crafort Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture) will be holding a new program called "KANJI TOKYO" in the Shonan/Hiratsuka area, where foreign tourists visiting Japan can enjoy an authentic calligraphy experience. In this experience, calligrapher "MADARA" will be the instructor, and participants will be able to enjoy a unique cultural experience of writing lucky or auspicious kanji characters and turning them into scrolls, original hand towels, and tote bags. This calligraphy experience provides an opportunity for foreign tourists who wish to learn more about traditional Japanese culture to experience deep Japan. The event will be held in the local town of Hiratsuka, which has not been developed into a tourist destination. The attraction is the passionate cultural experience that can only be experienced in this hidden gem of a place, Hiratsuka.

Launch of a full-scale calligraphy experience program for tourists from overseas

In this activity, calligraphy artist MADARA will be the instructor. Participants will take up a brush and experience calligraphy while learning the meaning and beauty of a single kanji character. Madara will then convert the participant's name into kanji and create a scroll of the work. Using the completed name calligraphy, participants can choose one of the following items to take home as a souvenir: a hand towel, a T-shirt, or a tote bag. This program is not just a "writing experience" or "creating an original item," but also allows participants to experience the spirituality of kanji and the joy of self-expression through calligraphy. Unlike short calligraphy experiences found in other urban areas, this program: • Understanding the essence through dialogue with a calligrapher • The process of putting "meaning" and "feelings" into the selected character • Sublimating the completed work into a scroll and original goods • We pursue the perfection of a deeper and more memorable "cultural experience" by enjoying Hiratsuka, a town of artisans and culture, an unexplored land for overseas travelers. This will surely be an unprecedented and valuable opportunity for foreign travelers who wish to experience Japan's spiritual culture "from within, not just on the surface."

KANJI TOKYO staff introduction

  • Calligraphy artist MADARA(ショドウアーティスト マダラ) Assigned events/Years of experience, etc.:He has been practicing calligraphy since 1977 (at the age of 5). He achieved the rank of 8th Dan (master) in junior high school, and in 1996 he started incorporating graphology-based "graphology" into his calligraphy.

Madara's real name is Yoshinari Kowata. He chose the pen name "MADARA" to express the mixture of all the colors of fun, hardship, and the life-or-death Great East Japan Earthquake that changed his life. Since 1996, he has been running a mochi shop and selling issho mochi by mail order. At the time, there were no stores selling issho mochi online, and no stores selling mochi with names engraved on them. He incorporated traditional Japanese graphology into his own calligraphy and perfected the calligraphy of "graphology" to bring good luck. This issho mochi is a unique one, written with graphology to wish the baby happiness, and it became popular, ranking first on Rakuten many times, and winning the Shop of the Year award in 2005, selling products with names that can be said to have established the issho mochi genre. This is a calligraphy artist who has written calligraphy for 800,000 people in about 20 years. This time, this artist will hold calligraphy classes for foreigners, convert English names into kanji, and design scrolls written in calligraphy and other hand towels, T-shirts, and tote bags.
