The "Shisa-making experience" is overwhelmingly popular among indoor leisure activities that can be enjoyed during a trip to Okinawa. It can be broadly divided into three types: the "ceramics experience," in which you bake an original piece from scratch using clay; the "painting experience," in which you add color and pictures to an already-made shisa; and the "accessory making experience," in which you turn shisa into accessories and other items.
Of the many Okinawa craft experiences available, we chose the most classic of all, the "Shisa-making experience." That's because my son is currently obsessed with playing with clay, so this was the perfect choice! (lol) Another plus is that it seemed like the best way to experience Okinawa's history and culture. Another great thing about the "Sesokojima Maimai Shisa" is that it's only 1 minute away from the Churaumi Aquarium, a must-visit spot for tourists in Okinawa (adults get bored here, but kids want to live...), making it easily accessible. You can stop by on your way home.
Originally, I was looking for a marine sports activity to enjoy the sea of Ishigaki Island, but in this blog, I will post about a recommended plan for a "Shisa making experience" that I wanted to try once when I went to Okinawa. As a souvenir, I tend to buy a Shisa made by a professional craftsman, and I think that's fine, but if you want to make memories from the making, you want to participate in an experience plan where you can make your own Shisa and a Shisa making class. I looked at various plans, but the plan held by "Kabira Yaki Rinka" in Ishigaki Island that I will introduce this time seems to be reasonably priced and allows you to enjoy an authentic Shisa making experience, so I picked it as a candidate.
Shisa are legendary beast statues that are often seen in Okinawa. They are installed on the gates and roofs of buildings, on hills in villages, etc., and are meant to ward off evil spirits that bring misfortune to houses, people, and villages. They are often installed on the roof, but recently it is common to see shisa installed at the entrances of hotels and souvenir shops. In other words, shisa are the perfect item that everyone recognizes as an "Okinawa souvenir," and by making them by hand, you can experience the culture and customs.
