This bamboo-filled tour allows you to experience the culture of Kyoto bamboo shoots in Oharano, Nishikyo Ward, a famous bamboo shoot production area. A bamboo shoot farmer who manages the bamboo forest will provide an easy-to-understand explanation of the bamboo shoots' ecology and culture. You will also have a full harvesting experience using a rare hoe unique to this area, and you will enjoy dishes made with the fresh bamboo shoots you harvested yourself (four dishes that farmers usually eat will be provided. Drinks such as sake will also be provided). While the bamboo shoots are boiling, you will have the opportunity to make bamboo chopsticks (including matcha and sweets) at Shop & Gallery Chikuseien. Welcome to Kawaguchi, one of the first post towns on the ancient Nikko Onari Kaido highway, which once connected Edo (modern day Tokyo) with the temple and shrine-filled city of Nikko. Your guide will meet you at Shakujouji Temple, just a short walk from the station, ready to take you into a day in the life of a shogun traveling to Nikko to pay their respects at Toshogu Shrine. Generations of Tokugawa shoguns, who ruled over Japan during the Edo period, stopped here during their journeys. Your guide will give you an overview of this history, before taking part in a Buddhist blessing ritual. Then get a true taste of Edo cuisine, by enjoying the same meal that shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune ate during his visit to the temple on April 13, 1728. The menu was recorded in a historical chronicle, and an Edo food expert recreated each individual dish based on recipe books from the period. Finally, you will have the unique opportunity to try on a Takasagozome kimono, featuring elaborate patterns that were all the rage in the inner quarters of the shogun's court. Most people in Japan have never seen, let alone worn, a Takasago-dyed kimono!

In this workshop, you will experience the final coating and sprinkling of gold powder on old Japanese pottery that has been restored over time by a Kintsugi expert using real lacquer. The materials used are lacquer and real gold powder. Because it is a natural material, it is a traditional method that is completely food safe and ideal for tableware. Each step up to the finishing stage will be demonstrated using actual tools and materials, and we will introduce the history and philosophy of Kintsugi behind it, as well as various finishing methods and aftercare. Please enjoy the most moving moment of Kintsugi! On the day, you can choose either a small plate or a cup for the Kintsugi experience, and take the completed pottery home as it is.
