Mojiko Port opened in 1889 and once flourished as an international trading port. Many historical buildings from the Meiji to early Showa periods, as well as classical Western-style architecture, remain in the surrounding area. The nostalgic and elegant atmosphere, which makes you feel as if you are traveling through time and space, attracts many tourists.
The best time to see the wisteria flowers is from late April to mid-May, when about 22 varieties bloom. The large wisteria trellis, covering an area of about 1,000 square meters, is very spectacular, with the walls covered in long wild wisteria. The most spectacular are the two types of rattan flower tunnels, 80 meters and 110 meters long, respectively. Inside the tunnels, colorful flowers of lavender, white, and pink bloom in abundance, creating a gorgeous change of colors that is very attractive. The fragrance of the garden is also intoxicating, leaving you feeling satisfied in both body and mind.
The exterior of Kokura Castle's castle tower is of Tang Dynasty construction, giving it a simple yet bold impression. It was founded by Hosokawa Tadaoki, who ruled the Buzen and Bungo regions in 1600 and held a fiefdom of 400,000 koku. In 1632, Ogasawara Tadamasa began to rule Kokura Castle. Since then, it was the residence of the Ogasawara clan for 10 generations for about 230 years until the Meiji era. In 1866, Kokura Castle was burned down in the Keio Heijin Incident and its glory was lost. The current Kokura Castle was rebuilt in 1959.
