Lake Biwa is a freshwater lake in the mountainous region of mid-western Japan, near Kyoto. It is a symbol of Japan, a national park, and the largest lake. It is a designated lake under the Act on Special Measures for the Conservation of Lake Water Quality in Japan, and is included in the Ramsar Convention's list of Wetlands of International Importance. Lake Biwa, like Mount Fuji, is considered a symbol of Japan by the Japanese people, and is affectionately called the "Lake of Life."
It is said that during the Heian period, the monk Chishin built a temple on the shore of Lake Biwa to pray for the safety of the lake and the salvation of all living beings. It is a temple of the Daitokuji school of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. The current building was rebuilt in 1949 and renovated in 1958, and retains the old style. The floating temple on the lake is known as "Katada Rakugan," one of the Eight Views of Omi, and has been loved by many writers, including Matsuo Basho.
La Collina Omihachiman is a fairy-tale-like sweets kingdom created by the local confectionery shop Taneya and architect Terunobu Fujimori.
