If the Fairy Terrace is closed, please come to the Furano Wine Research Institute. "Ningle Terrace" in Furano is a forest craft experience workshop based on a character from the novel by Japanese author So Kuramoto (to be precise, a 15cm tall elf who lives in a big forest). The small wooden houses here are small shops selling basically handmade unique accessories such as glass crafts, paper crafts, hand-painted paintings, and crafts made from dried lavender from Furano. Every shop is small and exquisite, and every product is sold only here and is one of a kind. The lights that are lit up at night are very romantic. Furano Wine Research Institute - "Furano Wine" made with locally grown grapes (sold only on days Fairy Terrace is closed) Half a century ago, in the 1960s, there were no grape vines in Furano, except for wild grapes that grew in the mountains. With a climate and terroir similar to Europe, Furano has a strong passion for winemaking, and the Furano City Grape and Fruit Research Institute was established to specialize in growing grapes for wine. More than 50 years have passed since its founding. During this time, many passionate people have participated in experimental research and product development, and today's popular Furano Wine was born. While there are wineries that use imported grapes, Furano Wine adheres to its founding spirit of "stimulating local agriculture through the wine business" and continues to make wine using locally grown grapes in Furano. This is a mixed tour, and participants come from all over the world.
This zoo has become famous for its "behavioral exhibits," which create comfortable spaces for animals according to their ecology and bring out their natural behavior. You can see animals living vibrantly in various places, such as the "Penguin House" where animals can swim freely through an underwater tunnel, the "Seal House" where seals go up and down a cylindrical tank, the "Polar Bear House" where you can see them diving spectacularly into the pool, the "Orangutan House" where you can take an aerial stroll through a 17m-high tower, the "Hippo House" where you can see them swimming in the pool from directly below, the "Red-Crowned Crane House," the "Ezo Deer Forest," and the "Hokkaido Animal House," which are unique to Hokkaido zoos. In 2022, the "Ezo Brown Bear House" will open, allowing you to get up close and personal with Hokkaido's representative wild animals in an indoor enclosure modeled after Shiretoko. During the "Penguin Walk" held during the snowfall in winter, you can see the adorable penguins waddling freely around a course without fences. (The Penguin Walk is held from late December to mid-March each year, depending on the snow conditions. The Penguin Walk is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m.)
In winter, the whole area is covered with white snow, and Shikisai-oka becomes a snowy paradise. There are also snowmobiles, sledding, and other recreational activities. Even beginners can enjoy the snow and nature. You can also visit an alpaca farm. In winter, the rows of trees on the distant hills become like sentinels, guarding the land in an orderly manner. Only tall trees remain on the vast white snow. This minimalist style makes people hesitate to move and stop to look. This is the charm of Shikisai-oka in winter. (Snow activities are at your own expense: alpaca farm, snowmobile, snow rafting, sledding, snow tubing, business hours: early December to February of the following year 9:00-16:00 (closed on December 31st and January 1st), March 9:00-16:30 *The period may change depending on the amount of snowfall.)
It was named after the Nissan commercial "Ai no Horizon" (Horizon of Love) that was featured in 1972. The male and female protagonists, Ken and Mary, performed a wonderful commercial in the northern land with this tall poplar tree as a backdrop. Near the Ken & Mary Tree, there is a triangular building painted in pale yellow surrounded by Christmas trees, which is very cute.
