Plan description

Lake Shikotsu is Japan's northernmost unfrozen lake. In winter, the leaves fall, and the snow covers the land in a blanket of white. With temperatures below freezing and winds picking up, it can be described as a harsh natural environment. The beauty of this time of year lies in the unique scenery it offers. This winter cruise primarily focuses on the source of the Chitose River, Lake Shikotsu's outlet, which is relatively unaffected by wind and waves. The colder it gets, the more beautiful the waterfront becomes during the harsh winter months of December through February, and there are plenty of unique experiences to enjoy. While the lake may seem cold in winter, our guides will show you how to enjoy the lake in winter, searching for wildlife and its traces, and photographing the ice. This program involves connecting two canoes to enhance stability, and a guide will also be on board.

Preparing your luggage After checking in, please prepare your luggage using the luggage storage baskets, waterproof bags, and waterproof phone cases. We also have lockers available for storing valuables, so please feel free to use them. We can also store large luggage such as carry-on bags.

Let's start! Put on your life jacket, grab your paddle and set off! It's about a 10-minute walk to the canoe launch point. Enjoy the walk while taking in the surrounding nature.

I will show you how to paddle a single paddle. Once you arrive at the launch point, you will be shown how to paddle with a single paddle. Even if you are a first-time canoeist, don't worry! Your guide will show you how to use a single paddle. Don't worry, you'll be able to do it in no time after a little practice on the water. It's also important to make a final check of your life jacket.

Let's get on the water! The excitement begins with the feeling of floating on the water. The final route of the tour will be decided by the guide based on the wind conditions on the day. Now, should I continue along the headwaters of the Chitose River or go to Lake Shikotsu? Look forward to seeing what route it will take on the day! *If the wind is strong and the waves are high, there may be days when you cannot go out to Lake Shikotsu. Even if you can't go out to the lake, we will do our best to show you the natural charms of Lake Shikotsu!

Take a good look underwater, listen to the sounds of nature, and fully experience the nature of Lake Shikotsu with your whole body!

Proceed slowly, and sometimes stop It's difficult to discover the wonders of nature just by passing through. Your guide will take the time to show you the best natural spots at the time! In winter, you may even encounter wild animals during the tour.

Highly stable twin canoe During the winter, the water temperature can reach nearly 0 degrees. It would be a disaster if you were to tip over and fall into the water. However, there is no need to worry, as the chances of a twin canoe tipping over are virtually zero, so you can join the tour with peace of mind.

A view unique to a non-freezing lake The sub-zero temperatures and strong winds freeze the waves, creating spray ice. Let's go and explore the natural beauty of Japan's northernmost unfrozen lake. The tour ends after returning to Kanoa's shop.

If you arrive by car

90-120 minutes from Sapporo Station, approximately 45 minutes from Chitose Airport, and approximately 30 minutes from Tomakomai. Please head to Lake Shikotsu Onsen Town, located northeast of Lake Shikotsu. Parking is free during the winter.
