8世紀末、勝道上人は日光の山々を修行の地として開山した。これが「日光山」の起源。大蛇の背を伝って大谷川の激流を渡った伝説から、神橋（別名山菅の蛇橋）は神聖視され、江戸時代には将軍と修行者しか通行できなかった。日光山揺籃の地は、橋を渡ってすぐの本宮神社と四本龍寺。東照宮が建立されるはるか大昔の出来事。家康公はこうした背景を心得ており、日光山を選んだのかもしれない。
