When you think of smelt fishing, Hokkaido comes to mind, but I investigated at Lake Kizaki in Nagano Prefecture, which is easily accessible from Tokyo where I live. Lake Kizaki, along with Lake Aoki and Lake Nakatsuna, are known as the Nishina Sanko. Lake Aoki is famous as the place where the two legs were sticking out in the TV drama "The Inugami Family." It made quite an impact. Sukekiyo is cute. The Northern Alps tower over the west side of Lake Kizaki, and there are guesthouses and campsites on the lakeside where you can see the magnificent nature, and it is crowded with many tourists.
Every year at this time, I research smelt fishing on the Internet and in magazines, and have become quite knowledgeable about it. It's the best thing ever, fishing with friends and enjoying the spectacular view of Mt. Fuji in the background, and eating the freshly caught fish as tempura. Lake Yamanaka is a place that can be enjoyed all year round, but it gets very cold in winter, so tourism changes drastically between summer and winter. In summer, you can enjoy SUP boarding and canoeing on the lake, take a guided tour of the Aokigahara Jukai forest, and go trekking to power spots from a variety of courses. However, in winter, it becomes difficult to enter the mountains unless you are quite advanced, so these activities are no longer possible. Instead, in July and August, you can fish for smelt, which is prohibited, and there are colorful events that can only be seen during this season, such as night illuminations and ice candle festivals. Lake Hibara, located in Kitashiobara Village, Yama District, Fukushima Prefecture, is a lake that belongs to Bandai-Asahi National Park.
