When you think of smelt fishing, Hokkaido comes to mind, but I investigated at Lake Kizaki in Nagano Prefecture, which is easily accessible from Tokyo where I live. Lake Kizaki, along with Lake Aoki and Lake Nakatsuna, are known as the Nishina Sanko. Lake Aoki is famous as the place where the two legs were sticking out in the TV drama "The Inugami Family." It made quite an impact. Sukekiyo is cute. The Northern Alps tower over the west side of Lake Kizaki, and there are guesthouses and campsites on the lakeside where you can see the magnificent nature, and it is crowded with many tourists.
Every year at this time, I research smelt fishing on the Internet and in magazines, and have become quite knowledgeable about it. It's the best thing ever, fishing with friends and enjoying the spectacular view of Mt. Fuji in the background, and eating the freshly caught fish as tempura. What's more, the catch is so much smaller than in sea or river fishing that I think I could have a serious fight with a 4-year-old child. I think I'd lose if I let my guard down, though lol
Lake Yamanaka is a place that can be enjoyed all year round, but it gets very cold in winter, so tourism changes drastically between summer and winter. In summer, you can enjoy SUP boarding and canoeing on the lake, take a guided tour of the Aokigahara Jukai forest, and go trekking to power spots from a variety of courses. However, in winter, it becomes difficult to enter the mountains unless you are quite advanced, so these activities are no longer possible. Instead, in July and August, you can fish for smelt, which is prohibited, and there are colorful events that can only be seen during this season, such as night illuminations and ice candle festivals. In the harsh winter, you can even see Diamond Fuji! Indoor craft experiences such as dyeing, pottery, and glasswork are also popular plans for people of all ages and genders.
Lake Hibara, located in Kitashiobara Village, Yama District, Fukushima Prefecture, is a lake that belongs to Bandai-Asahi National Park. The lake was formed when the mountain collapsed due to the eruption of Mt. Bandai, and is said to be the largest volcanic dammed lake in Japan. The eruption created many lakes and ponds, giving birth to the beautiful Goshiki-numa. Among them, Lake Hibara is the largest lake in Urabandai. Beautiful islands float on the lake, and the lake offers magnificent views in every season. Cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, and snowy scenery in winter. Lake Hibara always shows a different side to it, making it a tourist spot that can be enjoyed just by driving along the lakeside road.
Other fish that are in season in autumn include sardines, bonito, autumn salmon, and mackerel, but this time we would like to introduce you to the "wakasagi (smelt) fishing experience" activity, which is in season from autumn to early spring. Wakasagi fishing has long been a popular winter leisure activity on the lake. Even children and beginners can easily get started, so it's perfect for family fishing. This time, we will introduce three carefully selected plans from among the smelt fishing experiences that can be enjoyed at Lake Yamanaka in Yamanashi Prefecture!
The Urabandai/Bandai Kogen area in Fukushima Prefecture in the Tohoku region is an attractive place with beautiful nature that changes with the seasons. In the spring and summer, you can enjoy outdoor leisure activities such as camping around Mount Bandai, the symbol of the region, and in the winter season, it is a popular spot where many skiers and snowboarders gather to enjoy winter sports on the high-quality powder snow that comes from the abundant snowfall. On this page, we will focus on the latest information for the 2019-2020 season of smelt fishing, a popular activity that is held only in the winter at Lake Hibara, known as one of the top outdoor spots in the Urabandai/Bandai Kogen area. For those planning to visit Fukushima this winter, whether you're traveling, going on a date, or going for a weekend drive, we've got some must-see content for you!
