At Senkoji Temple, which boasts a history of 1100 years and has a temple on the summit of Sakiyama, a sacred mountain on Awaji Island, you can visit the main hall while enjoying the view of Sumoto City, one of the eight scenic views of Sumoto, and experience a sutra copying experience in a mysterious silence, which is an extraordinary experience. If you wish, you can also visit Iwato Shrine after the experience. Sakiyama, also known as Awaji Fuji, is said to be the first mountain created in Japan in the legend of the creation of the world by the gods Izanagi and Izanami. At Senkoji Temple, which has a temple on the summit of Sakiyama, you can experience copying sutras. First, you can climb about 200 steps to tour the grounds of Senkoji Temple, learn about the origins of Senkoji Temple, and see the place where the Awaji Island custom of "Dango Korogashi", which is rare nationwide, is performed at the temple. You will also be greeted by a lion-like boar, instead of a lion-dog, enshrined in front of the main hall. Because it is a temple on the mountaintop, you can see the central and southern part of Awaji Island, and if the weather is good, you can see the Naruto Strait and Wakayama. Return to the temple office and go to the "Daishido" to experience copying sutras. In copying sutras, you will copy the general Heart Sutra. Place the paper on top of the model Heart Sutra and copy it with a brush pen. Beginners are also welcome. By copying the characters in a solemn space, you can spend a valuable time reflecting on yourself. You can donate the copy to the temple or take it home. After the experience, you can also visit "Iwato Shrine", a popular power spot that enshrines a huge rock where Amaterasu Omikami hid herself, about 10 minutes down from the temple. ■Jogi Nyorai Saihoji TempleMany worshippers visit this temple since ancient times as a Buddha who can grant even the greatest wish of a lifetime. It is said to be particularly beneficial for matchmaking, fertility, and safety, and it is customary to make a wish while receiving a prayer. The Tennozuka, where Emperor Antoku's belongings are said to have been buried, is also a power spot for matchmaking. ■Please try the legendary ohagi that sells 5,000 pieces a day, which can only be eaten at Housewife's Store Saichi Sendai! Three types are sold throughout the year: red bean paste, kinako, and sesame. This supermarket has a line of people waiting to eat ohagi even on weekdays. ■RaiRai GorgeA beautiful gorge with huge rocks and strange stones eroded by the Natori River looming over it. Looking down from the Nozokibashi bridge, you will see a naturally formed heart-shaped depression in the rock, which has been certified as a "sacred place for lovers," and is also a popular photo spot. ■Akiu Otaki Falls is a 6m wide, 55m high waterfall that has been selected as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan" and is also designated as a national scenic spot. You can see the whole waterfall from the viewing platform, or you can go down to the waterfall basin in about 5-10 minutes by descending the promenade from the side of Fudotaki Bridge. Welcome to Kawaguchi, one of the first post towns on the ancient Nikko Onari Kaido highway, which once connected Edo (modern day Tokyo) with the temple and shrine-filled city of Nikko. Your guide will meet you at Shakujouji Temple, just a short walk from the station, ready to take you into a day in the life of a shogun traveling to Nikko to pay their respects at Toshogu Shrine. Generations of Tokugawa shoguns, who ruled over Japan during the Edo period, stopped here during their journeys. Your guide will give you an overview of this history, before taking part in a Buddhist blessing ritual. Then get a true taste of Edo cuisine, by enjoying the same meal that shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune ate during his visit to the temple on April 13, 1728. The menu was recorded in a historical chronicle, and an Edo food expert recreated each individual dish based on recipe books from the period. Finally, you will have the unique opportunity to try on a Takasagozome kimono, featuring elaborate patterns that were all the rage in the inner quarters of the shogun's court. Most people in Japan have never seen, let alone worn, a Takasago-dyed kimono!

We have prepared a special program that is limited to one group per day and allows you to enjoy Shizuoka tea with all five senses. The Higashiyama district, which produces tea that has been designated as a World Agricultural Heritage Site, is one of the highest quality tea producing areas in the prefecture, but in recent years there has been an increase in the number of dilapidated tea plantations in this area. In this plan, you will pick tea in a scenic tea plantation that has been renovated from a ruined tea plantation, and you will enjoy the picked tea with tempura or as a kaiseki meal with seasonal local ingredients. Also, as a fun activity before and after your meal, you can work up a sweat by climbing up to the top of Mt. Awagatake, the symbol of the area, for about 30 minutes. From the mountaintop terrace, you can see the large tea garden below, the Oi River, Suruga Bay, and the Izu Peninsula on the horizon. On clear days from autumn to winter, you can even see Mt. Fuji. After your meal, enjoy a sencha ceremony where you can brew delicious tea yourself using a teapot.
