It is the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan. ▼Toya Lake Cero Observatory is a great place to take panoramic photos of Lake Toya. From here you can enjoy natural views around Lake Toya, including the islands of Lake Toya, Mt. Yotei, Mt. Showa Shinzan, and Mt. Usu. Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch: On December 28, 1943, a large earthquake occurred near Mt. Usu on the shores of Lake Toya. As a result, the volcano erupted and the earth rapidly rose to form a tall mountain. Volcanic activity continued until September 10, 1945, and there were 17 relatively active volcanic events in two years. In commemoration of this volcanic activity, a new volcano with an elevation of 398 meters was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1957 and named "Showa Shinzan".
