This is a plan to make Oshima Tsumugi, a specialty product of Amami Oshima, using an actual Oshima Tsumugi handloom. Each and every thread of Oshima Tsumugi is intricately colored, and when the vertical and horizontal threads intersect, it becomes a single pattern. Please join us for a handmade experience where you can experience the beautiful colors and the fun of hand-weaving. After the experience, you can take a walk in the elegant Japanese garden that shows the expressions of the four seasons and the Amami-style garden that reproduces the virgin forest of Amami.

We were received very hospitably and had a amazing experience. The people were really friendly & supportive. We had a lot of fun and they tried to explain us, although we did not speak Japanese. It was really interesting to experience this ancient art. It was one of the best experiences out of our total Japan trip. Thanks to all the staff members!

Vegetable dyeing refers to the process of dyeing cloth by extracting pigments from flower petals, grass, and tree branches. This vegetable dyeing is also used in some of the dyeing techniques of Oshima Tsumugi. At Amami-no-Sato, you can actually dye handkerchiefs and other cloth products with plant dyes to create original scarves in deep colors. After the experience, you can take a walk in the elegant Japanese garden that shows the expressions of the four seasons and the Amami-style garden that reproduces the virgin forest of Amami.

スタッフの方は丁寧に説明してくれたが、体験は自分で作業したのは最初の柄付けの輪ゴム止めのみ(ほんの5分程度)、後の工程は全てスタッフの方がやった。体験としては正直なところ期待はずれ。ストールの出来上がりもいまいち。

初めての草木染体験でしたが、係りの方が丁寧に説明、お手伝いしてもらえたので、難しくなく高齢の両親でも楽しく作ることが出来ました。出来たものをそのまま持ち帰れるので、帰りには1人ずつ違った柄を見て楽しみました。施設の植物や日本庭園は手入れが行き届いていて素晴らしかったです。また、同じ施設内のレストランも利用しましたが、奄美の郷土料理「鶏飯」もとても美味しかったです。施設入口の受付の方はとても親切で、食事と体験のお手配もしてもらえてとても助かりました。
