Spend a full day creating a kozuka — a small decorative utility blade that was once concealed in the scabbard of a Japanese sword. The material used is the same as that used in real Japanese swords & tamahagane, the highest-grade steel in the world. During the experience, you will make a clay base (tsuchi-dai), inscribe a blade crest (yasurime), attach the blade, carve your name onto it, craft a kozuka case, and sharpen the blade to complete the piece. Our studio is the only place where you can experience both making a kozuka and sharpening it yourself. You will learn the Japanese sword-making process through hands-on work. Striking and shaping iron, and seeing the wave-like patterns emerge, is something you cannot fully understand until you try it yourself — making this a truly valuable learning experience.
