Owakudani, a popular tourist destination in Japan, is a crater formed by a large eruption that occurred on the northern slope of Kamiyama about 4,000 years ago at the end of the Hakone volcanic activity. Most of the spring water in Owakudani is poisonous, so it is also called "Great Hell". It was not until Emperor Meiji visited in 1876 that the name was changed to Owakudani.
