Located in a corner of Tsuyama Castle Town, Teramachi is a historic district lined with historic temples that developed under Mori Tadamasa, the first feudal lord of Bizen Province and lord of Tsuyama Castle. This tour offers a time-traveling experience in the castle west area, a designated designated preservation district where the atmosphere of the Edo period remains strong. Guided by a local monk, you'll learn about the historical background of Teramachi, anecdotes surrounding each temple, and the lives of samurai and commoners, all while experiencing aspects of life that are rarely experienced today. Another major attraction is the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Japanese architecture, including the beautiful cobblestone streets and majestic temples.
Located on the west side of Tsuyama Castle, the "Castle West District/Teramachi" is Tsuyama's most historic district, where the temples and samurai residences that were established during the feudal era still remain beautifully. This area, which preserves the traditional scenery of a castle town, has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government, and just walking around the area exudes a sense of the weight and tranquility of the times, transporting you back to the Edo period.
While touring the historic temples, you can learn about Tsuyama's religious culture, architectural beauty, and the lives of people during the feudal era through commentary from local priests and guides. Among them, Hongenji Temple, Myohoji Temple, and Saihoin Temple are particularly captivating with their respective historical anecdotes and beautiful gardens.
Under the careful guidance of a monk, participants will regulate their breathing, correct their posture, and clear their minds. This time of introspection and silence, which is not available in everyday life, will leave participants deeply moved and mentally refreshed. This is a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange that will deepen their understanding of Zen philosophy and Japanese values.
