Plan description

***Due to the risk of heatstroke, midsummer guided tours of Nageire-do Hall, even on low mountains, are suspended from late July to early September. Consultation is required. Please answer questions and confirmations when applying.*** Nageire-do Hall, a National Treasure, is located on Mount Mitoku in Misasa Town, Tottori Prefecture, and is known as the most dangerous national treasure in Japan. Come and worship at Nageire-do Hall, surrounded by the fresh greenery of spring's young leaves and the yellow foliage of autumn's yellow forests. While you can view Nageire-do Hall from the worship site at the foot of the mountain, we recommend walking the Shugendo path with all your heart and soul to purify your six senses and cleanse yourself of impurities, and to worship at Nageire-do Hall up close. Although the distance to worship at Nageire-do Hall is short, the steep Shugendo path involves climbing tree roots, climbing chains, and walking over rocky mountains. While you'll be making the same round trip, the descent is also dangerous. Additionally, only two or more people are permitted to enter the mountain, so solo travelers and those doing solo activities must accompany someone. Furthermore, in order to protect the natural environment and maintain Shugendo, trekking poles and other walking sticks are not permitted. The rigorous and dangerous Shugendo experience can be safely and securely escorted by a local guide. For those who feel unable to go alone, please use a local guide as a travel companion or Shugendo leader. While Mt. Mitoku itself is a low mountain at 899 meters above sea level, the location of Nageireido is at the foot of the mountain at an elevation of 400 meters. We do not recommend hiking on low mountains in midsummer, as temperatures can be as high as in towns on the plains, increasing the risk of heatstroke. We do not offer tours from late July to early September. We will consult with you based on your physical strength and mountaineering experience.

For solo travelers and solo activities! It is not permitted to enter the Shugendo trail to Nageiredo alone!

Mt. Mitoku/Nageredo is a steep mountain ascetic practice, so there are rules that prohibit you from climbing alone. I have seen many people who came without knowing about the mountain and left disappointed at the reception desk. It's frustrating to come all the way and still not be able to climb a mountain. In such a case, please read the guide who can guide you through Shugendo with safety and security first!

We recommend visiting during the autumn foliage season up until November 30th! The Shugendo trail to Nageiredo Hall on Mt. Mitoku is closed in winter!

Mount Mitoku and Nageiredo are closed for the winter from December to March, and will reopen in April of next year. We recommend visiting from November 6th to November 30th, when the yellow leaves are at their best. Of course, we also recommend the spring cherry blossoms, the rhododendron season, the flower of Misasa Town, and the season of fresh greenery (April to May)! Mount Mitoku itself is a low mountain at 899m above sea level, but the area where Nageiredo is located is also low at 400m above sea level. We do not recommend visiting low mountains in midsummer, as temperatures can be as high as in towns on the plains, increasing the risk of heatstroke. We do not offer tours from late July to early September. We will consult with you based on your physical strength and level of activity.

Our guides will guide you through the steep path of Shugendo, putting safety and security first!

The Shugendo trail to Nageireido is so dangerous that it is not possible to enter the mountain in rainy weather. (For this reason, we ask that those traveling from afar plan their trip with ample time and a backup itinerary.) Depending on your age and physical strength, you may be asked to wear a helmet or use ropes to ensure your safety. By accompanying a guide, you can experience Shugendo with safety as your number one priority, to avoid injury.
