心泉会館

心泉会館 features

The calligrapher, Shinsen Kitakata, is a Buddhist priest of the Otani school of the Jodo Shinshu sect and is one of the representative calligraphers of the Meiji era who built Hokku-ji Temple. His real name is "Meng", but he used "Shinsen" or "Tsukiso", "Light rain", "Clouds", "Character Zen room owner", and "Kyoumatsukaku owner". It is famous that he traveled to Shanghai, China as a teacher at Higashi Honganji Temple, learned from the northern school style that was popular at that time, and introduced it to Japan. In addition, he became interested in "Epigraphy," a study of texts and pictures engraved on metal objects and stone carvings that have existed since ancient times in China, and later influenced the calligraphy. The calligraphy style was established as "freewheeling of the union of the swords" with the meaning of freely writing the book of the swords like a semi-cursive script or a cursive script. This made Shinsen one of the best calligraphers of this era.
