The opening of the winter fishing season for smelt holes at Lake Nakatsuna depends on the weather and smelt resources. It was not lifted in 2025, 2024, or 2023. It was lifted in 2022, but not in 2021. This area is a cold region with a lot of snowfall. When there is a lot of snowfall, the snow acts as a cold protection and true ice does not form. Snow and ice form, but they cannot support the weight of a person. The hours for hole fishing at Lake Nakatsuna are 7:00-16:00 (2026 dates are yet to be determined).
