In this workshop, you will experience the final coating and sprinkling of gold powder on old Japanese pottery that has been restored over time by a Kintsugi expert using real lacquer. The materials used are lacquer and real gold powder. Because it is a natural material, it is a traditional method that is completely food safe and ideal for tableware. Each step up to the finishing stage will be demonstrated using actual tools and materials, and we will introduce the history and philosophy of Kintsugi behind it, as well as various finishing methods and aftercare. Please enjoy the most moving moment of Kintsugi! On the day, you can choose either a small plate or a cup for the Kintsugi experience, and take the completed pottery home as it is. We will also prepare a relaxing tea time with beautiful Japanese sweets. Enjoy a relaxing time while touching Japanese tradition. (All workshops are in English) Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese repair technique that uses lacquer and gold to repair broken or chipped pottery. It is a unique Japanese aesthetic sense that even damaged and imperfect forms are beautiful. By decorating with gold or silver, rather than hiding scratches, you can breathe new life into them and create a sustainable cycle of cherishing things. Repairing also gives you a sense of peace of mind, so it is also called art therapy. Since the repairs are done using natural materials such as lacquer, wood powder, and gold dust, you can rest assured that they can be used on tableware. *This class does not use synthetic resins such as epoxy resins used in modern and simple kintsugi.

A lacquer workshop in Maejima, Naha City, offers a "simple gold lacquer" experience class for tourists and those who want to try gold lacquering even though they don't have much time. This class incorporates traditional gold lacquering techniques, but is a shortened version that anyone can easily enjoy. You can have a unique experience of using the gold lacquer technique to repair broken vessels and other broken items and breathe new life into them. "Simple gold lacquer" is perfect for travelers with limited time, and even beginners can participate with confidence. By decorating the broken parts as "scenery", you can create original works full of personality. However, since the works created in this experience are simplified versions, they cannot be used for eating or drinking, but they are perfect as interior art that you can enjoy as decoration. Vessels that you have repaired and designed yourself will become a special one-of-a-kind item, and by displaying them in your home or office, they will become wonderful art pieces that will brighten up your space! Full-scale gold lacquer experience classes using real lacquer are also held regularly every month. You can take your time to repair vessels and broken items while carefully learning traditional techniques, and experience discovering new beauty.

This is a course where you can experience "Modern Kintsugi" at a long-established lacquerware store. In this course, unlike full-fledged kintsugi, which uses real lacquer, substitute lacquer is used to restore the pottery. It is resistant to rashes and dries quickly, so you can take your work home with you on the same day. In addition, in this course, you can prepare a vessel for restoration, so you can easily experience Kintsugi empty-handed. Of course, you can also bring the vessel you want to do kintsugi. The shop is located in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, where many long-established traditional craft shops gather. During the Edo period, it prospered as a base for commerce and logistics, and even now you can feel the atmosphere of Edo culture everywhere. Why don't you experience Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese restoration technique, while enjoying a walk before and after the experience?
