At our shop, you can create your own original soot bamboo chopsticks. Soot bamboo refers to bamboo that has been smoked for over 100 years in the smoke of a hearth. The chopsticks you create are highly praised for their non-slip properties and ease of use. They are easy to care for and extremely durable, making them popular with couples and families of all ages. They also make great gifts. Only those who have used them will appreciate the ease of grip and use of soot bamboo chopsticks. Take this opportunity to try them out. Perfect as a keepsake from your trip to Kyoto or as a gift for a special someone, you can take your creation home with you on the same day.
This workshop takes place in a lovely old house, with an equally lovely owner. You get to choose your own (almost finished) chopsticks, and basically you will sand them with sand paper, then polish them. While that is less hands-on work than at other workshops, I think the reason is the material used - these are made of something nicknamed "iron bamboo", and that's one of the best materials for chopsticks. So while your actual contribution to the final product may not be all that much, what you get are actual high quality chopsticks that are as durable as they are a cool souvenir!

This chopstick-making experience takes place in a classroom in Gion. Learn how to use traditional tools, then choose your favorite wood from a variety of colors and begin carving! Once you've carved and shaped your chopsticks to your desired size, you can sand them, apply oil, and finish them off. This is a one-hour crafting experience perfect for beginners, including families and groups of friends.
