Amamie Kobo is a quiet creative space renovated from an Oshima Tsumugi factory. Here, you can experience making your own original T-shirt using the "Amami Bingata" stencils, which are based on the plants and scenery of Amami. It's a special time to hand-dye your own one-of-a-kind shirt while feeling the nature and culture of the island. It's perfect as a memento of your trip or as a souvenir. ~Schedule for the day~10:00 Choose a T-shirt and decide on a designChoose a T-shirt in your preferred size and color, and decide on a design using the Amami Bingata stencils. There are motifs that are typical of Amami, such as plants and scenery. 11:00 Mix the pigments and start dyeingMix the pigments according to the design you have chosen, and dye the T-shirt with the base color. You can enjoy the unique flavor of handmade work. 11:30 Add a point pattern and finish it off by dryingAdd a point using the Bingata stencil to complete the design. Finally, dry it and your original T-shirt is ready!

<What is Oshima Tsumugi?> Each individual thread is meticulously colored, and a pattern is only created when the vertical and horizontal threads intersect. <About the experience plan> You will weave an original piece using an actual Oshima Tsumugi hand loom. This plan does not involve matching traditional patterns, but rather allows you to choose your favorite colored threads (kasuri threads) to create a striped piece. You can take your finished piece home on the day and use it as a table centerpiece or vase mat. *The length of the finished weaving will vary from person to person. <Experience benefits> After the experience, you can stroll through the elegant Japanese garden, which changes with the seasons, or the Amami-style garden, which recreates the primeval forests of Amami.

We were received very hospitably and had a amazing experience. The people were really friendly & supportive. We had a lot of fun and they tried to explain us, although we did not speak Japanese. It was really interesting to experience this ancient art. It was one of the best experiences out of our total Japan trip. Thanks to all the staff members!

Fukuki is also known as the "Tree of Happiness." We will provide the handkerchiefs for you. 初めての草木染体験でしたが、係りの方が丁寧に説明、お手伝いしてもらえたので、難しくなく高齢の両親でも楽しく作ることが出来ました。出来たものをそのまま持ち帰れるので、帰りには1人ずつ違った柄を見て楽しみました。施設の植物や日本庭園は手入れが行き届いていて素晴らしかったです。また、同じ施設内のレストランも利用しましたが、奄美の郷土料理「鶏飯」もとても美味しかったです。施設入口の受付の方はとても親切で、食事と体験のお手配もしてもらえてとても助かりました。

スタッフの方は丁寧に説明してくれたが、体験は自分で作業したのは最初の柄付けの輪ゴム止めのみ(ほんの5分程度)、後の工程は全てスタッフの方がやった。体験としては正直なところ期待はずれ。ストールの出来上がりもいまいち。
