Northern Miyazaki
Takachiho Gorge
Takachiho Gorge, located in northern Miyazaki Prefecture, is one of Japan's most famous scenic spots, located in Takachiho Town, famous as the "hometown of Japanese mythology." The beautiful columnar gorge formed by the eruption of Mount Aso is home to an emerald green river and Manai Falls, which has been selected as one of Japan's 100 best waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy the magnificent scenery on a rental boat.
Southern Miyazaki
Nichinan Coast
Nichinan Coast is a 100km long coastline where you can enjoy the spectacular scenery that symbolizes the southern prefecture of Miyazaki, with blue seas and blue skies, rows of Phoenix trees, and blooming tropical flowers. Along the coastline, which is lined with beautiful scenery, there are many scenic spots overlooking the sea, and Horikiri Pass is one of the most famous scenic spots on the Nichinan Coast.
Udo Shrine
Udo Shrine in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is a representative shrine of southern Kyushu, with its colorful vermilion-painted main hall inside a cave on a cape jutting out into the sea. It is famous for its "Undama Nage" ritual, where you throw a "Undama" (lucky ball) with your wish in mind, and if it lands in a depression in a rock called Kameishi, about 12 meters away, your wish will come true. It is one of Miyazaki Prefecture's most famous power spots, and is visited by many worshippers and tourists.
Central Miyazaki
Aoshima Shrine
Aoshima Shrine, a staple tourist spot in Miyazaki, is located in the center of Aoshima, a small island about 1.5km in circumference that is said to cover the entire island. It is said to be the setting for a famous Japanese myth, and is a power spot known for its blessings in finding love. Surrounding Aoshima are the giant washboard-shaped rock formations known as the "Devil's Washboard," which have been designated a national natural monument.
Nishitachibana Street
The area centered around Nishitachibana Street in the center of Miyazaki City is the largest downtown area in Miyazaki Prefecture, and is affectionately known as "Nishitachi" by locals. More than 1,500 restaurants are crammed into this compact street, including izakayas serving Miyazaki's local cuisine, stylish bars, standing bars, and yakiniku restaurants. It's the perfect place to enjoy Miyazaki's izakaya culture and lively atmosphere.
Saitobaru Burial Mounds
The Saitobaru Kofun Group, located in Saito City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is one of the largest groups of ancient tombs in Japan and a nationally designated historic site. More than 300 kofun, or ancient Japanese burial mounds, are scattered across a vast plateau stretching 2.6 km east to west and 4.2 km north to south. At the Saitobaru Archaeological Museum, valuable materials excavated here are exhibited, allowing visitors to learn about life in ancient Japan. The entire area is a park, and many people visit to see the cherry blossoms and rape blossoms in spring, sunflowers in summer, and cosmos flowers covering the ground in autumn.
Western Miyazaki
Ebino Plateau
Ebino Highlands is located in the northern part of Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park, and is a plateau at an altitude of 1,200m that spreads across the border between Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures. It is surrounded by mountains of all sizes, and is one of Miyazaki's leading trekking spots, where you can experience the grandeur of nature through the numerous landscapes created by volcanoes. You can enjoy the scenery of each season, with Miyamakirishi and Nokaido flowers from spring to summer, clusters of Japanese pampas grass and autumn leaves coloring the mountains in autumn, and frost-covered trees beautifully decorating the tree branches in winter.
