This giant, a seated bronze statue of Amitabha is the main object of worship at Kotokuin Temple. At the Zeniarai (i.e., money-washing) Benzaiten in Kamakura, you will see how people wash money here and learn some useful things. Out of a rock cave at this shrine, there flows a spring with miraculous powers, and a belief arose that by washing coins in this spring, one could obtain a long, happy life and good fortune. This belief, which spread throughout Japan, has continued down to today, so every day the shrine is visited by a large number of people. Legend has it that devotion to Uga (god of good fortune)/Benzaiten at this location started when Lord Minamoto no Yoritomo, in response to a dream, came here to worship on the day of the Snake, and in the month of the Snake, in the first year of the Bunji era (1185). On the day of the Snake, which is the feast day of Benzaiten, the divine favor is believed to be particularly strong, so the turnout at the shrine is even bigger on that day.

A man named Saemon, who lives at the foot of Mount Hiko in Tsukushi province (Kyushu), loses his seven-year-old son and, feeling ashamed, becomes a priest and travels around the country. One springtime, when he goes to Kiyomizu-dera Temple on his way up to the capital, a boy named Kagetsu sings a little song. He tries to shoot down a nightingale that is trampling flowers and performs an amusing kusemai (storytelling with dance) based on the good fortune of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. When the monk sees this, he realizes that it is his lost child and they meet face to face. Kagetsu is happy to see his father and tells the story of how he was abducted by a Tengu (long-nosed goblin) at the age of seven and traveled around the country, playing the kakko drum and a sasara (traditional Japanese percussion instrument). After performing a dance that describes his life, father and son set out together on a journey to follow the Buddhist Way.

○ Synopsis
When a woman who resents her husband for abandoning her for another woman makes nightly pilgrimages to the Kibune Shrine to curse her ex-husband, a priest tells her the oracle. It says that if she wears a red kimono, paints her face with vermillion powder, puts an iron trivet with three flames on her head, and holds rage in her mind, she will be able to turn into a demon and fulfill her grudge while alive. Her husband, on the other hand, has been having nightmares lately, so he asks Abe no Seimei, a famous yin-yang diviner, to pray for him. While Seimei is praying with all his heart, the living spirit of a woman appears as a demon and tries to kill the man. Seimei however, exorcises the demon with his spiritual power.

○ Synopsis
Sanjo no Kokaji Munechika, a renowned swordsmith, is ordered to forge a sword, but he is troubled by the lack of a suitable partner swordsmith, so he visits Inari Shrine to pray. Then a child appears, encourages him that the sword will be splendidly made with his blessing, and tells him about the virtues of the sword in detail. He promises to become Munechika’s smithing partner and disappears in Mount Inari. When Munechika returns home and offers a congratulatory prayer, the deity of Inari appears before him. After successfully forging the sword and naming it "Kogitsune-maru", the deity rides on a cloud to return to the peak of Mount Inari. This song praises the famous sword and the divine virtue of Inari. The small calligraphy of "Hakuto" is a profound practice unique to the Kongo school. In the second half of the play, the young shite (main actor) is changed to an old man, and the speed becomes intense. The latter, wearing an all-white attire, developes the kata (actions) even more rapidly than the previous one.

Su-utai (chant) “Okina” by Nohgaku Komparu School

"Okina" is considered a sacred performance and it is said that “Okina is a Noh play yet it isn’t". It is a special piece based on a ritual that existed before the establishment of Noh as we know it today. This is why the "shite" (main actor) bows deeply at the opening of the performance. Then, the play begins with the sacred words: "do-do-tarari-tararira...", and ends with the name of a Gagaku song as a congratulatory phrase. "Su-utai" is a form of performance in which a whole Noh piece, or part of it, is performed in a seated position using only chanting. Normally, the performers do not wear masks or costumes and wear montsuki and hakama. However, Okina wears a kamishimo (ceremonial dress) for this special piece. The "shite" sings the part of the Okina (old man), and the Okina and the Jiutai (chorus) interact with each other. The echoes of Japanese words handed down from the Yamato Sarugaku Komparuza (Komparu School) are chanted with respect and solemnity.

Mai-bayashi (dance and music) “Takasago” by Nohgaku Komparu School

A Shinto priest of Aso shrine meets an elderly couple purifying the shade of a pine tree at Takasago no Ura. The couple explains that the pine is paired with the pine growing in distant Sumiyoshi; together they are called "Aioi-no-Matsu" (Paired Pines). The old man lives in Sumiyoshi and the old woman, his wife, lives in Takasago. Living apart from each other, but as with the "Aioi-no-Matsu" pines, they say there is no obstacle in their relationship. When the couple finishes talking about the virtues of the pine tree, they promise to see the priest again in Sumiyoshi. Then, they get on a boat and disappear over the horizon. As the Shinto priest takes the boat to Sumiyoshi, Sumiyoshi Myojin (the masculine Sumiyoshi Deity) appears and divinely dances to bless the peace of the world. Mai-bayashi "Takasago" plays the latter part in "Mai-bayashi" form. "Mai-bayashi" is a form of performance in which the shite, the chorus, and the musician perform together. They do not wear masks or costumes, but wear montsuki and hakama instead. The main highlight is the divine dance "Kamimai" performed by Sumiyoshi Myojin, a young god.

Noh play “Tsunemasa” by Nohgaku Komparu School

On an autumn night, the Dainagon (archdeacon) of Ninna-ji Temple, Gyokei, holds a Buddhist ceremony with lute music as an offering to the soul of the deceased Tsunemasa, who died in the battle of Ichi-no-Tani. Tsunemasa's ghost appears and plays music on his treasured lute ""Seizan"", which was specially given to him by the royal prince. Later that night, Gyokei notices Tsunemasa's ghost floating in the light of the lamp and exchanges some words with him. Tsunemasa expresses his gratitude for the memorial service, dances, and plays music on his lute, but suddenly the moonlit night performance turns into a scene of carnage. Having died with resentment for his enemy in his heart, Tsunemasa has fallen in the Warrior's Hell and cannot help but demonstrate the ceaseless battles he suffers there every day. Ashamed to be seen in such a wretched state, he blows out the light. In the darkness, Tsunemasa's ghost has nowhere else to go in this world and disappears.

Dokugin (vocal solo) “Nonomiya” by Nohgaku Komparu School

Nonomiya is a sanctuary in the forest of Sagano, on the outskirts of the capital. When a traveling priest is visiting Nonomiya at dusk, a strange-looking woman appears and offers him a sakaki (sacred Shinto tree), explaining that Nonomiya was a place where the imperial princess, who had been chosen as the Saio (substitute for the emperor) to serve at Ise Grand Shrine, would leave the mundane world before going to Ise. In fact, this woman is the ghost of Lady Rokujo, one of the heroines of The Tale of Genji. Eventually, she appears in the form of her old self, reminiscing about the parting scene with Hikaru Genji at Nonomiya, and leaves. "Kiri" (the final song) is performed at the Nonomiya Dokugin. Dokugin is a form of performance in which a single performer sings the main highlights of a Noh play. The performers do not wear masks or costumes, but wear montsuki and hakama instead.

Shimai (dance without instruments) “Funa Benkei (end)” by Nohgaku Komparu School

After the defeat of the Taira clan, Minamoto no Yoshitsune decided to escape to the western part of Japan (Kyushu) due to a disagreement with his elder brother Minamoto no Yoritomo. Yoshitsune, accompanied by Shizuka Gozen, Benkei, and other retainers, heads for Daimotsu no ura. At Benkei's suggestion, Yoshitsune decides to send Shizuka back to the capital, and Shizuka dances in tears at her farewell party. As Yoshitsune and his party go out to the sea, the waves suddenly become fierce, and the grudging spirits of the Taira clan who sank into the West Sea appear. The vengeful spirit of Taira no Tomomori attacks Yoshitsune and the others with a naginata pole sword. Benkei prays to defeat Tomomori and forces him to leave. In the "Funa Benkei (end)" Shimai, the climax of the attack by Taira no Tomomori on Benkei and Yoshitsune is played. A Shimai is a form of performance in which a scene of Noh is performed only by the shite and the chorus. They do not wear masks or costumes, but wear montsuki and hakama instead.

Noh play “Aoi no Ue” by Nohgaku Komparu School

Lady Aoi (Aoi no Ue), wife of Hikaru Genji, is possessed by a specter and is lying ill. At the minister's command, the shamaness Teruhi summons the grudge spirit that has possessed Lady Aoi with her amulet bow sound. Then, the spirit of Lady Rokujo appears, lamenting the loss of Genji's love, accusing Genji of having abandoned her, and blaming Aoi for that. The priest Yokawa no Kohijiri, was asked to come to pray for blessings, the spirit of Lady Rokujo appears transformed into an evil demon, and the two fight fiercely. The vengeful spirit of Lady Rokujo is subdued by Kohijiri, soothing her heart and achieving Buddhahood.

Located in the center of the Hikone Castle Museum, this historical Noh stage was built in 1800 in the Edo period. In addition, there is the Omote Goten palace of the Hikone Castle, the residence of the feudal lord, which residential quarters (known as "Okumuki") have been recreated in a completely wooden structure just like in the Edo period. Detailed explanation! "Ii no akazonae" and the Ii clan's famous sword

Armor and swords are symbols of the samurai class and are among the top daimyo tools. In the Ii clan of the Hikone domain, all members of the clan, from the lord to the vassals, wore armor and other armaments in red. This troop formation is called "Ii no akazonae" (Ii red). This video features the armor of Ii Naosuke, the 13th head of the Ii clan.
