What is Farewell My Concubine?
After the death of Qin Shi Huang, the world was disturbed and each lord assigned it. Among them, the one who boasts the superiority is Xiang Yu, the overlord of Nishiso. On the other hand, the weak Han Liu Kun was expanding his power. After repeated fierce battles between Xiang Yu (Xiang Yu) and Han (Liu Kun), Xiang Yu was surrounded by the Han army and isolated. Xiang Yu realizes the end and says goodbye to his beloved Consort Yu, who commits suicide not to be a stumbling block ... It is a story that has been loved by the Chinese people and has been handed down in Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine / Haou Betsuhime" and Ryotaro Shiba's "Xiang Yu and Liu Kun".

What is a ten-sided ambush?
The Xiang Yu army was driven by the Liu Kun army and was surrounded from all directions and fell into an extremely dangerous situation. "Ambush from Ten Sides", which was created after this battle, is one of the ten oldest songs in China, and is a brave and dramatic song that makes full use of the advanced playing techniques of Chinese Biwa. In this work, it will be performed live by a Chinese pipa player.

A masterpiece of performing arts!
The art and costume design is handled by Tim Yip, a genius creator who won the Academy Award for Best Art in the movie "Green Destiny". The scissors art, which expresses the sense of urgency between Xiang Yu and Liu Kun pulling out their swords and the implications of the fate of the characters, is handled by Bailey Ryu, an artist who is active internationally, mainly in the United States.

YANG LIPING
Born in the Bai tribe, a minority ethnic minority in Dali, Yunnan, China. Although he has been enthusiastic about dancing since he was a child, he has never received a dance education and has become a dancer who is highly regarded both at home and abroad for his natural talent and creativity. In 1971, joined the Xishuangbanna Kabukidan. In 1986, he became famous for his solo dance "Peacock Spirit". Since then, he has actively engaged in art exchanges with many countries and has endeavored to popularize and explore dance art. He has also demonstrated his excellent talent as a director, and "Shangri-La," "Kura Nazo," and "Yunnan Hibiki" have become legendary stage productions. Yang Lee Ping's dance originates from folk art and land. She draws nutrients from nature and art and dances in a natural way, and is described as a "dancer poet" and a "soul dancer."

MESSAGE
I worked on this work because I wanted to bring back the historical story "Hao Betsuhime" that everyone knows in China.

The moment you step into the audience, thousands of scissors, like hanging heavy spells, shine a cold light on the stage, suggesting the fate of Xiang Yu and Liu Kun. Among them, dancers dressed as fluttering historical figures will appear. Not only do they play the role of historical figures, but they also represent the "fear and desire in the human heart" that is familiar to modern society. In the corner of the stage, the cut-out artist cuts the paper from the opening to the end, and expresses them with letters and pictures. She also shows that "time" remains unchanged over time.

Also, the challenge this time was how to express this world full of desires with dance. The individuality and energy of the dancers who play Consort Yu, Xiang Yu, and Liu Kun stand out on the stage, and with the soul of modern people, they have successfully connected the two timeless eras. I chose the role of Consort Yu as a male dancer because I wanted to incorporate elements of the Peking Opera and to express the search for light (yang) from the shadow through androgynous.

A turbulent river of Chinese history, unimaginable darkness of scissors, inspirational love beyond life and death, and climax red feathers that symbolize cruel beauty-something awaits you on this stage. Please step away from your daily routine.
