Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch: On December 28, 1943, a large earthquake occurred near Mt. Usu on the shores of Lake Toya. As a result, the volcano erupted and the earth rapidly rose to form a tall mountain. Volcanic activity continued until September 10, 1945, and there were 17 relatively active volcanic events in two years. In commemoration of this volcanic activity, a new volcano with an elevation of 398 meters was designated a Special Natural Monument in 1957 and named "Showa Shinzan". It is a "new mountain" that is still growing, and white smoke can be seen constantly spewing from the reddish-brown mountains. ▼ At the bear ranch near the entrance to the Showa Shinzan cable car, about 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears are kept. Brown bears are the largest wild mammals in Hokkaido. You can feed the brown bears at the bear ranch. When they see food, they stand up and wave at the tourists. They are very cute and adorable. It is said that the horse oil here is very useful. Adults (junior high school students and above) 900 yen, children (6 years old and above) 500 yen, please pay the fee yourself. Jozankei Onsen is called the back parlor of Sapporo. Jozankei is blessed with a rich natural environment and has beautiful scenery. A nature guide will lead you through the winter forest of Jozankei wearing Western snowshoes called snowshoes. The winter forest is full of fun elements such as fluffy powder snow, the sound of animal footsteps, bird watching, and snow slides. With snowshoes, you can walk anywhere you want, even in places where the snow is so deep that you would normally not be able to go into them. No experience or skill required. It can be easily enjoyed by everyone from children to the elderly. During the tour, we pitched a simple tent and took a break along the river. Enjoy the atmosphere of the quiet Jozankei valley! After the experience, we will stop by a hot spring. We provide free transportation to and from Sapporo Station. This tour is recommended for those who want to enjoy both snowshoeing and hot springs in Hokkaido in winter.

The inner parlor of Sapporo, the Jozankei area. Mt. Horai, a mountain at Nakayama Pass a little further back. Thanks to the altitude gained by car, you can enjoy a mountainous hike from the starting point. Due to the high altitude, there is still a lot of snow even in early winter and during the remaining snow season. The best times to visit are before the cold of early winter sets in and early spring when the weather is getting warmer. It's cold in the snowy mountains, so this tour is recommended for those who want to climb a snowy mountain and want to make their snowshoe debut. A professional guide will give lectures on the points of winter mountain walking. After descending the mountain, you can also drop in at Jozankei Onsen as an option!
