大名道具の筆頭にあげられ、武家の象徴でもある甲冑と刀剣。彦根藩井伊家では、藩主から家臣に至るまで朱色で統一した甲冑で身を固め、旗のほか鞍鐙（くらあぶみ）などの武具類も朱色としていました。これを「井伊の赤備え」と呼びます。井伊家13代当主・直弼（なおすけ）の甲冑と、初代直政（なおまさ）から2代直孝（なおたか）、３代直澄（なおすみ）へと受け継がれた名刀を取り上げ、「井伊の赤備え」と井伊家伝来の刀剣について紹介します。
