It is said that the origin of the large straw sandals was when the Niomon gate at Haguro Shrine was built and a pair of straw sandals made to fit the size of the Nio statues enshrined there were dedicated to the shrine. Later, people who were going on long journeys such as pilgrimages to Ise Shrine began to offer the sandals to pray for good health and a safe journey. In recent years, people have also prayed for good health, bountiful harvests, safety of the home, and prosperity in business. The "Akatsuki Mairi" festival held every February is a traditional festival that has been passed down for over 400 years since the Edo period, and a large straw sandal (currently only one pair) is dedicated to the shrine. The Fukushima Waraji Festival originated from the "Akatsuki Mairi" festival and is held every year from the first Friday to Sunday in August as a festival that protects the tradition of the largest straw sandals in Japan, promotes local consciousness, enjoys the short summer in Tohoku, and provides a place for citizens to relax. In addition, by donating a large pair of straw sandals (for one foot), which will combine with the large straw sandals donated at the "Akatsuki Mairi" to make one pair (for both feet), it also carries the meaning of praying for even stronger legs.

In search of unknown, spectacular views, step into the world of ice that spreads across Senninzawa Ice Garden. On the way there, head to the end of the lift at Zao Liza World Ski Resort, mainly going downhill to reach the frozen waterfall. The end of the second lift is a field of frost-covered trees lined with large ice monsters. You can also enjoy viewing the frost-covered trees. Put on crampons from the end of the lift and trek for about an hour to Senninzawa Ice Garden. Rental snowshoes and other lightweight gear were introduced two seasons ago. Once you arrive, it's time for lunch while watching the icefall. The guide will provide you with hot water, so please bring a lunch to warm you up, such as instant noodles. We will also set up a tent-type toilet during lunch, so you can use the restroom. You can hydrate without worrying about the toilet. After enjoying the mysterious world of ice, you will climb back up the steep slope and change into snowshoes. You can walk on the fluffy new snow, slide on your buttocks, and on the way back, you will walk down to the ski resort without using the lift. Those who are new to snow mountain climbing can participate, but you will need the stamina to walk for more than four hours on your own feet with a backpack on. There are some steep descents and climbs. *If the route to the icefall cannot be safely walked due to field conditions, we may change to a walk around the area on snowshoes. <Equipment> Snowshoes: ATLAS Helium BC 23,26 (Mountain snowshoes with innovative lightness and portability) Poles: Montbell Fall Line Poles (Lightweight poles for backcountry) Light crampons: Montbell Snow Spikes 10 (Required for steep slopes up to the icefall) Helmet: Montbell Alpine Helmet (Wear when approaching the icefall. This snowshoeing tour was one of the best things I did in Japan, even as a foreigner. All the guides I was with spoke very good English and were super knowledgeable and fun to talk to. They responded quickly to my queries about transport to Zao Liza World (which can be accessed by bus from Yamagata if well timed), and details about the experience. The equipment is high quality and very fun to learn to use. The scenery and waterfall is very impressive. Overall, value for money and fun is fantastic and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone travelling in Japan.

Take a tour with your guide through the quaint street lined with Japanese old houses! Masuda Town has prospered as a merchant town since the Edo period. Because this town has been the transportation hub, a variety of agricultural products gathered here. Merchants amassed wealth in their fields and created mansion towns. Inside these mansions, "Kura'' or a storehouse was built by wealthy merchants to store documents and household furniture. This storehouse is still inhabited and rare even in Japan. Feel the elegance in the detailed decorations such as white plaster, polished black plaster and lacquered interior. The townscape is home to many historic buildings of this area. Masuda town was designated as a National Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2013. Find the storehouses of each mansion with its structure unique and decoration. In this guided tour, you will be able to visit two to three mansions with storehouse while receiving an explanation.
