[Until March 20th] Once the autumn leaves have finished, the 2025 winter season is finally upon us! This is a snow trekking trip to the frozen waterfall known as Hyobaku in Zao, Yamagata. Every winter, the entire huge waterfall freezes over, creating a frozen waterfall about 30 meters high and several tens of meters wide. Its power cannot be conveyed in a photo. This area, which has long attracted ice climbing enthusiasts, is called the Ice Garden, and is filled with a world of ice that is like something out of a movie. In search of unknown, spectacular views, step into the world of ice that spreads across Senninzawa Ice Garden. On the way there, head to the end of the lift at Zao Liza World Ski Resort, mainly going downhill to reach the frozen waterfall. The end of the second lift is a field of frost-covered trees lined with large ice monsters. You can also enjoy viewing the frost-covered trees. Put on crampons from the end of the lift and trek for about an hour to Senninzawa Ice Garden. Rental snowshoes and other lightweight gear were introduced two seasons ago. Once you arrive, it's time for lunch while watching the icefall. The guide will provide you with hot water, so please bring a lunch to warm you up, such as instant noodles. We will also set up a tent-type toilet during lunch, so you can use the restroom. You can hydrate without worrying about the toilet. After enjoying the mysterious world of ice, you will climb back up the steep slope and change into snowshoes. You can walk on the fluffy new snow, slide on your buttocks, and on the way back, you will walk down to the ski resort without using the lift. Those who are new to snow mountain climbing can participate, but you will need the stamina to walk for more than four hours on your own feet with a backpack on. This snowshoeing tour was one of the best things I did in Japan, even as a foreigner. All the guides I was with spoke very good English and were super knowledgeable and fun to talk to. They responded quickly to my queries about transport to Zao Liza World (which can be accessed by bus from Yamagata if well timed), and details about the experience. The equipment is high quality and very fun to learn to use. The scenery and waterfall is very impressive. Overall, value for money and fun is fantastic and I would absolutely recommend this to anyone travelling in Japan.
