Mount Kuma was part of a caldera formed by volcanic activity approximately 73 to 80 million years ago. Its size stretched approximately 23 km north to south and 15 km east to west, making it comparable to the outer rim of Mount Aso. While the current topography does not reveal its original appearance, the distribution of rocks offers a glimpse of its majesty. There are 33 stone pyramids in the Kumayama area, the largest of which, located near the summit, is known as the Kumayama Ruins. The Historical Mystery Trail Walk - Kumayama Ruins Edition - explores the rich natural surroundings of Mount Kuma, including a rare stone pyramid unparalleled anywhere in Japan, as well as relics that offer clues to solving its mysteries.
