It is located near Lake Toya and was formed about 10,000 years ago. White smoke still comes out of the area about 450 meters in diameter, and no grass grows. There is a strong smell of sulfur. Noboribetsu Jigokudani was named for its hell-like atmosphere. ▼Oyunuma is a crater formed by the eruption of Mt. Hiyori. Sulfur springs at about 130 degrees gush out from the bottom of the pond, and are the source of the main hot spring inns in Noboribetsu City. There is an observation deck here, where you can look at the steaming lake in front of you, or walk to the lakeside to experience it up close.
