The Watatsu River is a first-class river with a length of 14.2 kilometers that originates in Kamiwatatsu, Kitahiroshima City, and flows into the Chitose River. The town of Kitahiroshima began in 1884 when 25 households and 103 people who moved from Hiroshima Prefecture settled along this river. If you rummage through the bushes with a dip net, you will see various aquatic creatures. The river is just under 15 kilometers long, but you will be interested in the diverse creatures. It is a canoeing experience on the Arekinai River, a tributary that flows through the Kushiro Marsh. The meeting place is JR Senmo Line, in front of Toro Station. The course starts from a lake called Lake Toro, goes to the Arekinai River, goes to the main stream of the Kushiro River, goes up the Arekinai River by canoe, and returns to Lake Toro. Because it is a calm river, you can go up the river, and even those who are new to canoeing can experience it with peace of mind. The river does not freeze even in winter, so you can experience canoeing throughout the year. The scenery that changes according to the season, and the Yezo deer, white-tailed eagles, and red-crowned cranes that you can meet if your timing and luck are good are also highlights.
